The steps below are for upgrading from Moneydance 2011 and earlier versions.

If you are not sure which version of Moneydance you're currently running, open the program and navigate to Help > About Moneydance (on a Mac select Moneydance > About Moneydance), where the version and build number will be displayed.

Before upgrading, we always recommend taking a backup or copy of your data file.

First, download and install the appropriate version of Moneydance for your system.

The latest version of Moneydance is available on this page.

All older versions of Moneydance are available on this page.

If you purchased Moneydance from the Mac App Store or Microsoft Store, you should download Moneydance from the relevant store page directly.

  • Open the newer version of Moneydance.
You will likely see the "Welcome to Moneydance" window.
  • Select 'Import New Account Set' then navigate to and select the YourFileName.md data file.
  • You'll then be prompted to convert your data file to the latest file format.

We recommend selecting 'Convert and Import'. This will move your data file to the default file location in the internal library.

Alternatively, select 'Convert Only' and your data file will remain in its current location.

Moneydance 2015 and newer versions use a new file format. Once your data has been opened with these newer versions, the file cannot be opened using Moneydance 2014 or earlier versions.

If you haven't already, you'll need to purchase a new license key that's valid for use with the latest version.

To do this, enter your license key into the 'Upgrading?' key tester on our purchase page. Click the link that's generated and you'll be taken to the checkout page with a 50% discount applied.

To enter your new license key, open Moneydance and select Help > Register Moneydance.
