The steps below are for upgrading from Moneydance 2012 and newer versions.

If you are not sure which version of Moneydance you're currently running, open the program and navigate to Help > About Moneydance (on a Mac select Moneydance > About Moneydance), where the version and build number will be displayed.

Before upgrading, we always recommend taking a backup or copy of your data file.

To create a backup, open Moneydance and choose File > Export Backup (NOT File > Export) to create a .moneydancearchive file.

First, download and install the appropriate version of Moneydance for your system.

The latest version of Moneydance is available on this page.

All older versions of Moneydance are available on this page.

If you purchased Moneydance from the Mac App Store or Microsoft Store, you should download Moneydance from the relevant store page directly.

  • Open the newer version of Moneydance.
You will likely see the "Welcome to Moneydance" window.
  • Your data file should be visible in the right half of the window.
Select your file to view your data.
  • If your file isn't listed, select "Open Other" and navigate to your .moneydance data file.

Moneydance 2015 and newer versions use a new file format. Once your data has been opened with these newer versions, the file cannot be opened using Moneydance 2014 or earlier versions.

If you need to use a .moneydancearchive backup file to restore your data -

  • Open Moneydance and choose File > Restore from Backup.

  • If you're viewing the Welcome window, select 'Import New Account Set'.

If you have purchased the previous version of Moneydance, you can redeem a free upgrade to the latest version. Your valid license key will be automatically applied to the newer version.

If the upgrade is not free, you'll need to enter your new license key. You can do this from Moneydance by selecting Help > Register Moneydance.

If you’re not sure if the upgrade is free or discounted, you can enter your license key into the 'Upgrading?' key tester on our purchase page.
