Import file from Money not recognised
I have only two file options to save files for export in MS Money:
Loose QIF
Strict QIF
I tried Loose QIF, but when trying to import the file into Moneydance, I get the following message:
Error reading file: java.io.IOException: Unexpected end of message while reading headers.
The file extension is .Ird

Many thanks Ben,
This has made everything a lot clearer. I do not know how incorrect exchange rates got into the system. I did not enter any myself when posting transactions. How are the exchange rates produced? Many transactions had incorrect rates and I have now corrected every transaction manually.
Total income and expenditure is calculated in pounds sterling. Can this be changed to euros?
Regards
Frederick

Were the transactions with the incorrect exchange rates downloaded from a bank, imported from another program or entered manually?
If you have the exchange rate retriever extension installed rates are downloaded from finance.yahoo.com. You can install this extension by selecting Extensions->Add. select From the internet and click next. and select "Yahoo exchange rate retriever" from the list. Click install. This will add a new menu item to th Extensions menu called "Exchange rate downloader" when you click it all your currencies will have their exchange rates updated. We have never had a report of this service providing incorrect rates.
The total at the very end of an income and expense report is converted into the base currency using the current exchange rate. The subtotals for each category in the report are displayed in the currency of the category. It is not possible to change this in the report.
Sincerely

Hi Ben,
I have had a catastrophic failure and needed to switch the software to another computer. I installed the software and then tried to import the latest back-up but this did not work. I simply went to file > Import but the backup file did not create the desired results. In fact, nothing happened at all. Can you please advise how I should proceed. I do have the latest back-up file on the new computer.

Hi Frederick,
Remove the appended date from your backup file. e.g. Remove -2010-11-25 from Moneydance.md-2010-11-25 so that your file name ends up as Moneydance.md (Your date format may vary)
You can then double click on Moneydance.md to open it.

Hi Ben,
A couple of days ago I transferred Moneydance back to my repaired computer. I then updated all data. This morning the computer crashed. After a reboot I restarted Moneydance. To my surprise the previously entered data were no longer there. Instead I was asked whether I wanted to open a new file, existing file etc. Fortunately, I still had latest data on a stick (minus those which I entered yesterday). So I loaded the data from the stick and then re-entered yesterday's data manually. Then I wanted to save the data to avoid a similar fiasco but the system did not accept it (Message see screen print). I wanted to save the data file in a location where I would find again, but there are not many options. The full file structure is not available.
What is the problem?
Regards
Frederick

Hi Frederick
I do not see a screenshot attached to your message. However I suspect that it says something like permission or access is denied when trying to save. If this is the case the solution is to either change the permissions on the folder you are trying to save to such that you user account has read and write permission or to save to a location that you know you have write permission to such as your desktop.

Hi Ben,
I urgently need help with this issue. Just to explain the current situation:
I can only load the latest data from a USB stick. The software does not save any data on the hard disk when I quit nor is there any popup window to ask to save the data. I cannot save anything on the hard disk. I have set up a folder called "Moneydance" under My Documents, but when I then go to Moneydance and attempt to save as, I cannot access the folder. It does not show. Please help. It is very difficult to always save everything straight away what with interruptions, automatic Microsoft updates etc. So that I have had to repost quite a lot of data already which is very frustrating.
Regards
Frederick

Hi,
I have sent the messages below to Ben, but got no reply. I am still having problems backing up on the hard disk. I just uninstalled and re-installed, however, with no change. The error message still pops up. When I close the program all data are immediately lost. I really need urgent help with this. Why doens't anybody answer?
Regards
Frederick

Hi Frederick
The problem is that you are trying to save your data to a location that your user account does not have write access to. Typically non administrator accounts on Windows do not have write permission to the program files directory. You should save you data file to somewhere you are certain you do have write permission to such as your documents folder.
Sincerely

Hi Ben,
Firstly, am signed on with my Administrator account, 2ndly, it does not matter what folder I use. I have tried to set up folders in the "My documents" file. But they are not even accessible through the "Save as" window. I can only drill down as far as "My Documents" but not to the "Moneydance" Backup folder that I set up.
Regards
Frederick

As an experiment can you select File->Save As.. and try and save the file to the desktop.
