Zions Bank Online Error: 15510

I want to try out Moneydance, but it is not connecting to zions bank. I have verified with zions bank that they do the OFX Direct Connection. It is listed in the list for Moneydance. I am moving from Microsoft Money as they no longer do automatic downloading of transactions. I want to find a software other than quicken if possible.

Is there someone that can assist? I read some of the forums and it sounds like there might be something blocking access to the server. I would like to know if this is something that could be resolved or if I just need to give up and bit the bullet and go to quicken.

I was told by the online banking rep at zionsbank that they know about moneydance, but don't provide support any for it. I'm not sure if they means moneydance can't be used, or they just don't provide any support if you are having issues with connecting with it.

I should mention that I'm using Mac OSX 10.5.8, Moneydance version 2010r2 (735) trial, Java Version 12.5

I am having the same issue. I would rather use Money Dance, but the Zions Bank is an issue to me. It will be my deciding point between Money Dance and Quicken. Thank you. I would love to hear from you.

Hi TJ and Danielle,

Unfortunately, we're not sure right now what's going on with our connection to Zions Bank. I'll be getting in contact with them later today to try and work things out. I'll keep you posted on what I learn.

Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for your interest in Moneydance.

Thanks for the quick response. I have a little more information that might be helpful. I learned that Zions has something called "PC Banking" that you have to have set up in order for a program like Moneydance to access the information. I DO have one set up (I did it a few days ago) so it should be active and it is different than my online banking id and number. If you need that to do any testing, etc. contact me directly and I can maybe help you out.

Sounds great Jessica. I hope you can get the connection to zions bank working. In response to Danielle's post. I was using MS Money with the zions bank PC Banking. It would not make the connection using the given customer ID and Pin.

I did download the transactions manually from the online banking and imported them into md and that seemed to work, although I didn't do any cleanup and the categories or anything. This seems like it would work, but I'd rather have the direct connection.

Look forward to hearing what you find out from zionsbank.

I will also add that I am more that willing to help with any testing or anything that I could do to help.

Hi TJ and Danielle,

Would one or both of you be willing to run an experiment for me? Here's what I'd like you to do:

1) After saving your current Moneydance file, create a new file. You can do this from the File menu (choose the New option).
2) (In Moneydance 2010) Open the Console Window. You can do this by going to the Help menu in Moneydance and choosing the Console Window option (it should be the fourth option down). This window will record any messages that you receive while trying to set up your connection.
3) In your new Moneydance file, create an account and try to connect to Zions. When you connect, DON'T use the New Connection button. Instead, use the Manual Setup button. It will ask you to supply the following information:

Name: Zions Bank
OFX Institution Org: 244-3
OFX Institution Id: 1115
OFX Connection URL: https://quicken.metavante.com/ofx/OFXServlet

4) Select all of the text in the Console and use the "Copy to Clipboard" button at the bottom to copy the text.
5) Paste the text from the message window into a text file (preferably saved with a .txt extension) and email that file to me at ***@moneydance.com.

The debugging logs that this produces will contain your account information. Please don't post them to this public discussion. Also, just to be safe you should redact any account info in the debug logs. Just replace it with something like "ACCOUNT NUMBER HERE" and it should be fine.

Thanks for your help in troubleshooting this. Hopefully we can figure out what's going on soon.

Hi Jessica,
I did it 2 different ways, so I will give you both. In this first post, I used the PC Banking PIN and Password that Zions gave me for PC Banking like Quicken, etc. (the next post will be using my online banking username and password)

In both cases, I have subbed out my username or PIN with text for security purposes :).
Thanks so much for looking into this. I really value your time.

Ok, here is the first one.

Jessica,

I have emailed my console report to your email. Let me know if I an do anything else. Seems like it doesn't even get a chance to connect at all to the server. The error pops up right away when you push next after choosing the account you want to do the online banking with.

Jessica,

I also tried the direct conect through buxfer.com online interface. It gave me the same 15510 error that I get when trying to connect through md. Just though I'd share that in case that helps at all. Sounds like it's not just md, but other services as well. Maybe they block access for all other OFX direct connect clients.

Hi All,

It's still not clear what the problem might be. I've emailed Zions directly to ask for their help. I'll keep you posted on what I find out.

TJ, thanks for the extra information. It's good to know that it's not just us. I'll pass that information on to them. It might also be helpful if you as a customer contact them and tell them that you're having trouble connecting through 3rd party clients like Moneydance and buxfer.com.

Just wanted to post a quick update to what I have been trying to do with zions bank. Still no luck with connecting, but I have been able to I think make some headway. I was researching some forums and found one in a moneywell forum that talked about this error with zions bank. There seems to be something that has to be done with moneydance and also with zions bank to allow connection and authenticate the client. I am currently in the process of emailing back and forth with a zions bank Customer Service Director who is helping me. He also assisted the people in the moneywell forum. I did download the trial of moneywell to see if they could connect, I couldn't, but did get a different error with their software and it told me to contact customer service that I needed to do a verification and security check with them. The error with moneywell was 15511 rather than 15510 with md.

Here is the email I received back from him (zions bank cs director) on what to do:

"Anytime that a Zions OFX customer begins using a new OFX certified software, Zions requires that multifactor authentication be completed. This allows our system to begin allowing secure connections with the new software. I have engaged that authentication for your profile. That authentication requires that you connect within 3 hours. If you are not able to connect by 10:50 AM MST today then we need to engage that request again. You can email me again or you can contact our service department between 8 AM to 8 PM MST M-Sat. Option 3 is the group you would need to speak to do this authentication."

I was unsuccessful with my attempt with MD. It seems that MD is missing something that allows it to be verified or something with OFX Server at zions bank. I came across a page that listed Direct Connect Errors in the moneywell forums. It listed error 15510 as a Client ID error.

Anyway, just an update. I am going to keep working on it. I like the moneydance software and like that it can be used on windows and mac, which I have both of. I am still not decided on what to do though. I can go with Quicken so I can have the Direct Connection to Zions Bank or just use moneydance with manual download and import into the program. Getting the zions bank connection working in md would really be helpful in my decision.

I have the same problem with Nevada State Bank which like Zions Bank is a subsidiary of Zions Bancorporation. It uses the same URL (https://quicken.metavante.com/ofx/OFXServlet) for OFX connections.

There are other banks with the same issue and it is most definitely an issue within Moneydance.

It has also been known to Moneydance but has largely been ignored until now hopefully.

This issue was first brought up in 2007 here:
http://moneydance.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1188253826/14

Replies #12 and #13 have some clues as to what the issue is (CLIENTUID and new OFX spec) but there is no resolution to the issue.

There was a Trac ticket opened in 2008:
http://www.moneydance.com/trac/ticket/1627

It was closed with a resolution of "worksforme" which of course can't be the case.

I found this post from 2009:
http://getsatisfaction.com/theinfinitekind/topics/why_cant_i_sync_m...

The answer seems to point the finger at the bank or the user.

So I had to search some more on my own. The first thing I found was this: http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=22904&start=10

The posts aren't numbered but in the 8th one down there is a post from someone who works for Innovision (a company that sells software for FI's for handling the OFX connections). Here is the text from that post for convenience:

1: Some institutions assume the "FI" aggregate (which includes the FID and ORG) will always be sent and they do validation against it. Note that this aggregate can optionally be sent by a client, but because some organizations assume that these are being sent by only be the "major" third-party "supported" applications (e.g. Intuit or Microsoft) they might only validate the ones they know about ... and always expect to see them.

Therefore, you may need to consider if and how to send those in your requests. This FI aggregate, from your perspective, would be roughly analogous to the client APPID APPVER ... in that you would need to have valid ones to pass in or you might get blocked by a particular FI's OFX server.

2: Another remote (very unlikely reason) possibility could be due to some of the new MFA features (now available in the newer specification of OFX) that an FI might choose to optionally implement which changes the OFX security model a bit. But if this occurs, it would tend to be limited to just banks and possibly credit unions. It's a remote possibility, but it could prevent your client-side KMyMoney behavior to stop working if it's not capable of interacting with MFA-enabled OFX servers.

Searching on MFA and OFX I found the following 2 links:

http://www.microsoft.com/money/fi/mfa.mspx
http://fi.intuit.com/support/security/ffiec/

There is the CLIENTUID term again which was posted to Moneydance back in 2007.

I am not a programmer or an OFX expert but it seems clear that there is a new OFX specification that includes new security parameters that Moneydance is not sending. It is not far fetched to believe that more and more banks will implement these security features which mean those banks will stop working with Moneydance. At what point will this become a serious issue?

This mirrors what the previous poster found as well.

I don’t want to use Quicken and I don’t want to leave my bank (I have done that before for banks that did not support MS Money).

I just wanted to update here, since I've been emailing directly with TJ and realized that others watching this thread might want to know what's going on.

Thanks to some very helpful emailing by TJ, we believe we've discovered the problem. Sean will be getting in contact with the techs at Zions to get clear on exactly how we need to update Moneydance to be able to connect, and then he'll hopefully be able to implement a fix, most likely in update to Moneydance 2010.

So, hopefully you all will be able to connect with Zions soon. I'll let you know when the fix is available!

I am able to download transactions from Nevada State Bank using build 738 although I initially received a 15511 error which is to contact the bank (I added these new error codes to the Trac Wiki) and they had to reset what they referred to as the PFM although the representative wasn't really able to provide many details as to what that is other then a PC banking security setting.

Hi all,

Anthony, thanks for confirming that this fix works for you and for noting that you needed to call your bank to get them to reset something. That it definitely useful information.

TJ and Danielle, can you please update to build 738 of Moneydance 2010 and let me know if it allows you to connect to Zions? You can download it from out website at http://moneydance.com/trac/wiki/Moneydance2010Beta. Sean tells me that there may be a delay time of a few days between when you update and when you're able to connect, due to the way Moneydance handles updating some of it's internal info. If you're unable to connect immediately after updating, you can still test the connection by creating a new Moneydance file and trying to connect to Zions through that.

Thanks all for your patience while we've worked on this bug! Hopefully this fix will work for Zions as well.

Jessica,

I want to report that it connected succesfully after I called up customer service to have them reset my connection to be verified again.

I downloaded the beta, tried the connection and it gave me the 15511 error to contact my bank customer service. I did and then tried the connection again and it went through and asked me which online account I wanted to use.

I downloaded my accounts and it appeared to work fine. Although the first time I didn't know what I was doing and assigned some of the wrong accounts to the wrong ones in my file, but got that sorted out. I'll post when I download more tomorrow and check to see if I got it set up correctly.

It does take a second to pull up the account list when first setting up the online banking so be patient and don't click next or it will by default assign it to the first account in the list. Also, you do have to type in the password each time you download the transactions for the account. That applies to every account. I'm not sure if there is a way to save the password in money dance so you don't have to type it in everytime.

Thanks for the update on the software. I'm sure this will help many people who want to try moneydance. I'll be testing it out a little longer before purchasing. Want to make sure the reports give me what I'm looking for, especially the forecasting one. So far it seems to be off with the dollar amount when using it and the reminders to forecast.

Anthony's Avatar

You can save your passwords by adding Encryption (from the File menu) to your file. Just check the "Store Online Passwords in File" and enter a password.

Which forecasting report are you talking about? Are you actually referring to an Extension?

23. 24 Posted by TJ Finlinson on 25 Jan, 2010 11:34 PM

TJ Finlinson's Avatar

I guess I am referring to the extensions. I tried both the forecasting and
the balance predictor, they appear to be off with the dollar amounts. For
example if I do a 12 month balance predictor it tells me that I will have
about $10,000 in that account when I know that is not accurate. I have my
account that I is only used for paying bills so what comes in and out does
not vary much. But I do have a few esimated expenses such as my utilities
that go up and down each month. In money I used their 'cash flow'
forecasting report to determine my future balance in that account and it
would let me see a scernario if I took so much out of it. It was very handy
and I was hoping that balance forecaster would do the same thing, but It
hasn't appeared to be very accurate... I'm just using the reminders to
calculate the graph and I have set up my reminders correctly as far as I can
tell. I like the software overall and like that there isn't a sunset policy
like there is with quicken.

I too was very dependent on the Money 'Cash Flow' feature. I also liked how you could estimate bills based on the average of X number of past payments.

One of the good things about Moneydance is the ability to add features through Extensions. Anyone (well anyone with programming knowledge) can write an Extension for Moneydance to add functionality.

I have found the that the "Balance Predictor" doesn't suit my needs. I am not sure what the "Balance Forecaster" is but I use an Extension simply called "Forecaster" which is available here. I am not sure if that is the one you to which you are referring.

It is the closest to the Money 'Cash Flow' feature that I have found.

I did download the forecaster and am using it. It appears to be a step in the right direction for what I miss about the MS Money Cash Forecasting feature although not quite as robust. I did go ahead and purchase MD 2010 and overall I'm very happy with it. It fits my needs, and although it's a bit of a different learning curve it's well worth the price and not having the sunset policy is awesome.

My next task will be to try and figure out how to work on the forecaster plugin and make it more like what I liked so well with the MS Money version.

Thanks for you help Jessica and to the Money Dance Team for getting the Online OFX connection working with Zions Bank and I'm sure with many other institutions.
