Stock Options
I've read everything I could find posted about tracking stock options. Unfortunately, I'm just not getting it. How would one enter a scenario where an employee was granted 100 options for Apple stock in Feb 2010 with a strike price of $10 and vesting period of 3 year (i.e. 1/3rd in 2011, 1/3rd in 2012, 1/3rd in 2013)?

OK, it has been a year since we have had any response from the MD support staff on this subject. Is this actually being worked on? Is any progress being made. Can we ever expect to see this? Can you make any knid of commitment whatsoever to when this will be added?
Support Staff 33 Posted by Angie Rauscher on 28 Oct, 2011 03:36 PM
Batwell,
This is a feature we're still considering for implementation, but I can't make any guarantees when, or if, this feature will be updated. We recognize this is an important feature to some of our users, but it has a relatively small number of requests for implementation in comparison to other features. I'm sorry I don't have a more immediate solution, but I will ask our developer Sean to take a look at this feature.

I just paid for the new version of Money dance and it still has no support for stock options? This is ridiculous. Don't high tech companies distribute Stock options to employees? Do Money Dance employees use their own SW? I guess not.
This is very, very dissapointed.
Support Staff 35 Posted by Jon Hoover on 22 Nov, 2011 08:29 PM
Hi Alex,
Yes we do use Moneydance and Moneydance is a product of The Inifinite Kind LLC a privately owned company, so no, we do not get stock options.
Please let us know if you have any more questions.
Sincerely,
Jon Hoover, Moneydance Support

Jon,
That didn't really answer the root of Alex's question, the same question that many of us have... why is support for stock options not a priority due to their common nature amongst high tech employees. Will Inf. Kind commit to supporting them and by when?
Thanks,
Brett

Thanks Brett for trying to help me get rid of thé politically correct anwers that we get from the support team on the true stock option suppport that users have been asking for years now and they have been ignoring
I guess we will need to wait until they go public
What a joke!

Full implementation of employee stock options has the highest ranking in our suggested feature tracking system.
I have asked the lead developer if their is any timeline for implementation.

Hi,
While the developers are in agreement that this would a nice feature to have, it is not a very broad section of our user base that is requesting this. It is possible that in a year or two we will implement it but there is not plan to do so in the near future.
Sincerely,
Jon Hoover, Moneydance Support

Thanks for getting back to us Jon. But I'm confused how the top ranked/most requested feature doesn't qualify for even a planned implementation date.
Support Staff 41 Posted by Jon Hoover on 27 Nov, 2011 09:28 PM
Hi Brett,
It has the highest possible category of ranking (along with a number of other requests). We don't have any individual numerical ranking of features.
Part of the reason it is ranked so high is because some of you have been quiet vocal about this. But the developers still don't believe there is broad enough support to justify immediate implementation. Sorry for not being clearer.
Sincerely,

This is ridiculas. First you try and tell us that it is top and therefore imply it will be implemented shortly and when pushed you confirm that actually it won't be implimented (ever) as the developers believe there's not enough support
Get consistent please and stop treating your clients as stupid. Most of us are waiting for this option. All it will take is another software package to be released that we like and you end up loosing us as customers for life.
A much stronger argument I think
Mark
43 Posted by Alex Candela on 28 Nov, 2011 06:09 AM
I completely agree with Mark. When I look at the added functionality that you guys are putting in the new releases is very little jut bug fixing. So you are just milking the cow and not investing enough on new features that your customers are asking now FOR YEARS
So keep going like that and you will loose us.

Maybe the development required for the stock options is outside the competences of the development team and this is the reason for it not being addressed. Just a thought:)

So your developers are setting development priorities? Maybe you should have product managers do that instead. Would make much more sense unless you want to end up with a product only developers can use.
How do you know that this feature is not needed by a broader user base? Just because more people are not vocal about it in this forum, doesn't mean they don't need it.

As far as I can discern, a "Stock Options" feature is not yet implemented for the following reasons:
The majority of basic, "hourly rate", employees are not offered the option to participate in a "Stock Options" program with their respective employers. I know this to have been true for basic, "hourly rate", employees of Checker Auto Parts, Pizza Hut, Amoco Gas stations, Godfather's Pizza, and Avila Retail.
The majority of employers out there do not offer "Stock Options" to their basic, "hourly rate", employees.

I would challenge that a bit.... without sounding pretentions.
Appel products are rather high-end and therfore mostly bought by middle to upper class. I would suspect that the vast majority of Mondey Dance users are Apple users... otherwise you stay with Money provided by MS.
Based on the above and the fact that many Existing Money Dance Cusotmers have already asked for this added functionality since several years without any result it really makes me believe that Money Dance is a product with little future and where the onwers are just Milking the Cow with their investment.
If Money Dance had other ambitions, it should listen to their customers feedback and react, rather than provide incosisntent excuses for years now.

So why do all the other software packages include options?
Mark Shuttleworth

alex: I was using Moneydance on a Windows machine before I switched over to an Apple computer. I was frugal when I bought my used Apple eMac for just $100.00 USD.
There are an equal number of OSX users as there are Windows users of Moneydance.
Support for Money was discontinued by Microsoft as of January 2011.
The fact is, only a handful (not many) of existing Moneydance users have requested for the addition of Stock Options.
Mark: They don't. Not ALL the other software packages available include support for Stock Options. AceMoney for Windows does not nor does Quicken for Mac.
Support Staff 50 Posted by Jon Hoover on 30 Nov, 2011 01:23 AM
Allow me to clarify further.
In our feature tracking system, any of the support staff can set a priority for a feature. This feature was set 'popular' by one of the support staff. The lead developer takes these recommendations under advisement. We are a fairly small company, a product manager position would not be a meaningful position in terms of workload.
I checked in with the lead developer and I relayed what he told me, to you all, about what his plan for long term development and implementation was.
There are many features we could and are implementing. The entire staff is in agreement that employee stock options would be a nice feature but it is a nice feature among many and there are others that are more popular and in higher demand.
Moneydance is not a product that is planned on being abandoned. This project was originally staffed entirely by people doing it as a second job. Over the past year, 3 people (including the owner) have switched to it it as their primary job. Moreover, if Moneydance was being milked for sales before abandonment would I really be being paid to talk to you all now?
I hear that this feature is important to some of you. And I am telling you that we are choosing to not prioritize it at the moment. There is only so many features we can implement at a time and this is not one of them. I understand that this is not acceptable for some of you and I am sorry to hear that we may loose you as customers.
I will gladly answer any further questions you all have and of course feel free to continue discussing amongst yourselves. I do ask if you all would be willing to abstain from trolling and insulting the staff of Moneydance. We are trying the best we can to put out a product that we can be proud of. I don't believe that our failure to implement your personal preference for a feature merits insult, I worry that doing so creates an unpleasant place for the support staff to work and other users to engage in.
Thanks.

Great response! Personally, whilst there are features I want in the MD
product, I know these take time and have to be prioritised. I am very
pleased with the speed of support and interaction from MD staff and I
am sure we would not get this from other companies (eg Apple).
One thought; why not send out a list of all enhancements requested to
users and get a once and for all vote on priority?
52 Posted by Brett on 30 Nov, 2011 01:14 PM
@Stuart, I agree it would be great to have the ability to see the list and vote. Perhaps it already is. If it were available through a simple API, this would be an excellent opportunity for a product plugin, so the list and voting capability could be integrated into every user's product (unfortunately it'd be opt-in though).
Anyway, it seems to me that employee stock options and stock market (i.e. put/call) options have a lot in common. Things like vesting, expiration, strike price are all features of both. When viewed in that light, this seems like a feature that would knock off several of the missing needs in the product.
Support Staff 53 Posted by Angie Rauscher on 16 Dec, 2011 01:44 AM
Stuart- We have considered creating a central list like this, but the current number of open requests is well over 1000, ranging from requests for stock options to requests to change the way equations are calculated within the program. A central, publicly available list is something we're working on, but it's not at the top of our to-do list.
Brett- I do understand that these features are fairly common in the U.S. Our developer is aware of the desire for this feature, and we'll let you know when we have more information.

I am another user requesting stock option functionality. For the past 10 years, according to my Quicken reports, options have averaged 26% of my household annual income. That income percentage would suggest I should purchase a new windows based laptop and Quicken. What does Monydance suggest I do?

i am also looking for the stock option feaure, are there any other products that support it out there on the market today? either mac or windows?

Another vote here too - would be really useful.

The stock options feature worked well in Microsoft Money it is one feature I'm missing in Moneydance. It is a siginificant parts of my remuneration package and I have to keep a separate spreadsheet to track my options. There are a lot of public companies out there with option schemes as part of their remuneration packages its got to be worth the time to develop the program.
