Regret my move to Moneydance?
My very old money programme was crashing alot and I wanted to
have something more stable on a mac platform. I transferred nearly
15 years of accounts over to Moneydance (across platform) and it
has all balanced just right. So far so good.
But it is the detail now that gives me some doubts. I don't bring
anything over from my bank online, all entries are manual. This is
because i need to have every entry specific and sometimes split to
specific categories.
My beef is that all I have is a home set up of accounts (I'm not
trying to be flashy and make it run a business) but I cannot do
just some simple reports. Eg. A report that tells me how much i
have spent on what for each payee. How much have I spent on water
i.e.. All payments to Southern Water or all Grocery payments to
Waitrose. Am I missing something here? It seems very simple and i'm
sure everyone would want this type of Payee report. And no memo on
split transactions. All seems to be very useless !!

Peter,
For getting a report by payee please go to the transactions report and press the edit button. Indicate the settings as desired and make sure you have specified 'subtotal by payee'. You can also use the transaction filter report to obtain something similar, it is much more versatile but also a little more complex. I apologize that this was not as obvious as it could be.
The lack of memo on splits is a regrettable lack that we will hopefully fix soon.
Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Jon
Thanks for this response but why can I not select just one payee just like one category can be selected and reported on. The Category reporting is straight forward why is the payee reporting limiting and complicated.?
With MS Money I could simply select eg. Tesco and get all payments made to that Payee in a specific date range. A hugely obvious and invaluable report option that I'm sure just about everyone would want access to?
Thanks
Peter

Peter,
If you would like to see a report on a single payee, go to the Transaction Filter report and press the edit button. Leave most things unchecked unless you want to limit the report to those attributes, and check on 'Memo', type in there the payee you would like to see the report on.
Sorry if this does not meet your needs.
Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Jon,
There is no "edit" button in the Transaction Filter report.
For both of you,
To list a single payee in a report, use the Transaction Filter report and fill in the Description field with the name of the payee.
See screenshot Pictures 24 and 25. I have used Capitol One for my example for the payee.

Hello James
This is fine and I have had some success with the report you suggest.
It would be better to be able to control the running balance within this report version.
I still don't know why Payees are effectively hidden away in description and that there isn't a drop down list of Payees like categories.
Maybe I am wrong but the most used report along with categories report (which works very well in moneydance) that anyone would want is what you've paid to whom?
Moneydance is almost there for me if only this becomes more straightforward and the memos are allowed in split transactions !!!
On a positive note synching with my ipad works well but will functionality is limited ie. Only 30 days worth of transactions.
It's also fab that it is on my mac and I can eleviate myself for good from windows!

James and Peter,
If you access the Transaction Filter report from the sidebar (as I assume most people will be doing, thought not always...) the 'edit' button is located at the top of the report.
Also, I record payees under Memo but I should have remembered that some (more?) people track their payees under description, I apologize for the confusion.
James, thank you for clarifying things.
Peter, I think the reason categories and payees function differently has something to do with categories in a double entry system functioning as accounts in a very literal way. Payees are data that is relevant but some people track it in different places (memo v. description) and it is not data that is even necessary for the accounting to work (though it is certainly useful). All that said, there is no reason for their not to be enhanced functionality around payees, it would require some redesign but I will check for existing suggestion tickets and create one if there is not one currently.
Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Jon,
I have never used the side bar before. To be quite frank, I didn't even know that it existed.
I have always gone into the Transaction Filter report per my post number 5.
A new View for me to play with and get used to.
Thank you Jon.
