Suggestion: Posting Period for Transactions

This is merely a suggestion; most people tend to handle their accounts on a periodic basis - normally monthly (get paid monthly, pay bills monthly and so on). The issue for me has always been that sometimes, the actual date a transaction occurs on may not reflect the REAL month (or 'accounting period') it is for.

For example, if you get paid at the end of the month, it may be that, depending on whether the end of the month falls on a week-end, that the payment is actually made (or arrives in your account) the following month.

For me, I tend to base my months (i.e. accounting periods) depending on the the date I am paid (for example, the 8th of each calendar month - so all transactions between, say, January 8th to February 7th are for the period 'January' even though some of those transactions are actually dated in February).

It would be very, very, very useful to allow for a 'accounting period' on each transaction so that it would be possible to indicate the correct period that transaction applies to if it is not one that can be evaluated from the date. In addition, any reports that are based on the month should allow you to report on the 'accounting period'.

I hope you're able to consider the above.

I note, too, that the most recent version allows you to set a fiscal year. However it seems to assume that the year always begins at the start of a month. Really, any valid date should be allowed (for example, the UK tax year starts April 6th).

    Hi Joseph,
Just as an FYI, April 6th is one of the 'Fiscal Year Start' options.

Oh I feel an idiot now .... but the point I was trying to make that it
ought to be possible you ANY date to be selected....

Nonetheless, thank you for your feedback !

Is there any further news on whether or not it is possible for each transaction to enter a period to which it relates as described in the original post ?

Are there any plans to do so ? And do you have a timescale if so - this is
the only thing preventing me from a purchase ...

    Hi Joseph,

Unfortunately I don't have a timeframe for when this is going to be implemented, though it's not very high priority so I don't think it will make it into Moneydance 2013.
