Sorting transaction reports
Can I sort a transaction report by transaction amount? by expense category? Can't tell from on line instruction book. Also, what fields are displayed in the report please.

Hi Bob,
Account, Date, Check#, Decsription, Category, Cleared, Amount, Balance.
By default the report is sorted by Date.
There is a 'Copy to Clipboard' feature that will allow you to Copy and Paste to a spreadsheet where you can then sort by any column.

thanks. That will not do what I need. just fyi, In Quicken I sort transactions by amount to match up and post categories to visa transactions (over 100 per month). It's easier to read the amount off of the receipts than it is to find the date. When I double click the item in the transaction report in Quicken it takes me to the register where I can post in the category and any note needed. If I'm off on a clipboard or numbers sheet I would not have the transport back to the register. I'm guessing in MD I'll just have to go through the register in date order to enter categories (not so easy when it's my wife's purchase). Is there any other MD way?

Hi Bob,
Maybe I misunderstood, from what your saying I think you should be able to accomplish what you want right from your Visa register. The register allows the user to sort by all of the above mentioned fields except of course the Account.
You may also want to take a look at the 'Search' report which DOES allow drill down to the txns

Hi Bob
You could directly sort the register by any of the columns you are interested in. Click in the header of the column in the register to sort by that column, click again to reverse the sort order.

Can I limit the sort to a selected date range? I'm usually reconciling 30 to 45 days of visa charges at a time.

You can't specify an exact range but you can filter the register by clicking the "30 days" or "60 days" filter at the top of the register.

Hi Bob,
Have you downloaded the free trial version yet? http://moneydance.com/other
It's limited to 100 manually entered txns. Imported txns don't apply. If you decide to purchase, you just need to enter the License key to unlock the txn limit. This way you won't loose any data that you've already entered.
The register view can be limited to All, Unconfirmed, Uncleared, 30 days, 60 days, This month and This year.
Another option is to add the free Find and Replace Extention from Mennesoft.
It allows sorting of all columns, drill down, date range selection and a lot more. It's really very flexible.

That will help. I can work around a few transactions that are already processed.

I'm trying to get up the courage to change to MD. I have years of data to transport when I switch, and I've been using Quicken for so long I have developed a bunch of special reporting work arounds.
I don't think I can run parallel systems for very long. With the number of transactions I download from visa and mastercard, and the number of price history updates I pull daily on stocks I don't want to do double work. I understand that once I download visa transactions to MD and then try to download the same transactions to a parallel quicken I will be blocked because the visa account will start the new download where I last left off..... is this correct?
I appreciate your replies. I'm keeping a file and hopefully when i roll over most of my questions will be answered.

Hi Bob,
I don't think so...
I can't speak for Quicken but I'm keeping parallel data files with Moneydance and MS Money, both sucessfully download all current (Chase) Visa txns.

I don't really know till I try it. I'm encouraged by your experience. Maybe someone else reading this will know for sure

You should be able to download the same transactions to both Moneydance and Quicken. Moneydance remembers the data of the last download and when you download again MD specifically asks for all transactions after that date. If Quicken had downloaded in the mean time it won't make any difference on the Moneydance side.

Good news. This will really help my confidence during the change over..... and makes using the "trial" version much more appealing.

Bob, I assume that your comments apply to Application-based, "Direct Connect", downloads. If I am using Web-based, "Web Connect", imported downloads, it appears that MD will show all transactions in the statement that I import, though I can eliminate any duplicates through the matching process. Is this correct?

Yes my comment refered to direct connections. If you download a QIF file and import that MD will show all the transactions in the QIF file. If however you are able to download an OFX or QFX file (aka MS Money file) and import that MD will only show the new transactions. OFX and QIF files contain a unique ID applied by the bank to each transaction that allows MD to remove any duplicates that might already be in the register.

Good question. I think I have some of both. My Chase Quicken visa card transactions, and a couple of others, are pulled directly by Quicken. It's been so long that I forget what I had to do to set those up. In contrast, my Suntrust Account would not pull from Quicken. I open Quicken, and also open Suntrust website. I have to send the Suntrust transactions to Quicken from the Suntrust website..... It is possible that Suntrust has now changed, but the old way works so I just keep doing it.
I am not familiar with the OFX, QFX, QIF but I read a lot in these postings about those kinds of files. My backup files on Quicken show as QDF when I look in my win xp explore file tree.
Not to confuse, but the new MD will go on my new Mac, not on the old xp.

Hi Bob
In order to import transactions from your bank into Moneydance you must go to your banks website and download a file. That file will be either in QIF, QFX or OFX format. If QFX or OFX are available you should choose that. If not then QIF will be fine. Your bank does not care how many time you downoad the same file.

Update:
The ability to sort within the register itself is better than some Quicken alternatives. In Quicken I had to create a report, and then toggle between the report and the register to enter categories, notes, etc. MD avoids that step.
Moved from QuickenWin 2008 to Moneydance 2010 and from Dell Win XP to Mac Mini 2.26 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac OS X 10.6.4. Moved over ten years of data. MD running one checking account, over 10 investing accounts, 2 credit card accounts. Using Web based updates for the checking and credit cards to avoid fees, selecting date ranges to avoid any chance of duplicate downloading.
MD support on this site has been outstanding.
I think you can close this thread.
Bob
