Balances in Calendar
One of my favourite features in Quicken 2007 is the ability to see future account balances in the Calendar view. Is something similar possible in MD, perhaps in an extension? I'd love to switch, but if I can't get this feature, I'll have to choose between looking for something else that does this, or sticking with Quicken (and I'm really sick of being reminded to upgrade).

Hi Ryan
Moneydance does not display the future balances in the calender however there are a couple of free extensions that will graph future balances. I believe "forecaster" is the best of these. It can be downloaded from the link below.

The financial calendar is the single most important feature of Quicken, for me. I want to be able to see, based on actual and scheduled transactions, what my predicted balance will be on any given day. This helps me make decisions about how much money I can move to investments/savings, or whether we can afford to make a particular purchase at any given time. I also use the calendar to see what bills are coming up so I can stay on top of what needs to be paid.
Graphs just aren't good enough. No matter how slick and awesome the app might be, lack of this one feature is a deal-killer. The first financial management app for Mac that adds this feature is gonna get my money, because I'm really sick of having to have a Windoze partition just so I can stay on top of our finances with Quicken!

I think this is a really good suggestion. I have created a ticket for this suggestion in our issue tracking system and directly attached it to this case.

I use QMac 2006, and I am confused by this discussion of Future Balance in the Calendar in Quicken and not in MD. My Calendar in Q does not show any Future Balance, and if it is a feature, I don't know how to turn it ON/OFF. Perhaps it is a Windows version feature?
The Registers, as opposed to the Calendar, in MD are much like QMac. If transactions in the future are entered, the corresponding balance is shown. The only difference I see is that Q shows both Balance Today and Balance on XXX, the date of the latest transaction, at the bottom of the register; MD only shows the last balance at the bottom.

Has this gone anywhere in the last couple of months? I'd love to have this ability, as I use it in Quicken all the time. I'm seriously considering the switch to Moneydance, and this would get me there even quicker.

The feature has not yet been implemented. By posing in this discussion you have cast a vote for the ticket.

This is very important to me. I will switch to MD from quicken if this feature is implemented. Right now I am waiting for Mint.com to implement this.

I came to the forum looking for the answer to this very question. I second the calendar forecasting ability. I have been using Quicken 2002 since 2002. Eventually I migrated to Linux but it wasn't until I got Quicken working under wine that I was able to finally get rid of my windows partitions completely.
Recently my bank has stopped providing QIF account downloads. Quicken 2002 won't import the QFX files my bank has replaced them with. Instead of taking my chances with Quicken 2011 and wine, I would prefer switch to a Linux native application. I really want this feature in my financial software. I will likely continue to manually reconcile my accounts with CSV reports in QW2002 until I get fed up and switch to a new Quicken or find another app that supports this calendar forecasting feature.
Regards,
David

re davet65; I think this is a Windoz only feature of Quicken. The Mac version has always lagged way way behind; Hence the search for a replacement for the crap that is Quicken Essentials.

Add my vote for this feature. I used the calendar in Quicken Windows a great deal. The other nice feature of Windows was to shedule a credit card transaction as "pay full balance". That meant that if you have reoccurring charges the calendar would assume you pay the outstanding balance (which includes the non-reoccuring charges in the current month as well as the reoccurring ones) and then schedule the reoccurring ones in the future balance in the calendar. I can do a work around with the forecaster extension but it is not as nice or intuitive. That said, I'm glad I made the switch to Moneydance this time last year. In 2010 I didn't have to boot up parallels to fun Quicken Windows.

A few items:
I agree, not being able to see the running balance in the planned/scheduled transactions view is deal killer for me. I was very excited to find MoneyDance, but once I see that you must commit a transaction for any kind of tracking (in the plug-ins) and that it is not shown on the calendar I will stay with a Wine install of Quicken or using Vbox, or forbid the thought, actually boot into windows proper.
The running balance should assume that all schedule payments are paid unless otherwise stated or changed.
Please include this item, once it is there I will buy. I have been Using Quicken 2008 refusing the buy a new quicken because it doesn't run on linux. Get this item working and installed, and you have a new life time customer and I will refer everyone I know.
Good luck and thank you.

I vote for this also. This is the single most important part of Quicken to me. I have used Quicken for many years and just made the switch to Moneydance with the new Mac computer (no more Windows - hopefully). So far, Moneydance is the closest that I could find to Quicken functionality. If you can replicate all of the functions of the Quicken calendar, it will be a huge improvement in the usefulness of Moneydance.
1) Add daily balance to the calendar days.
2) Add optional daily balance bar graph to the calendar.
3) Add ability to select which account/accounts to include in the balance.
Keep up the good work and I hope to see these improvements soon.

I vote for this too. This is the feature of Qiucken I use the most. I would like to completely move to Linux and use MoneyDance to track my finances, but without this feature it's not going to happen. I simply can't live without it.

@dd:
dd, fwiw, I've been using quicken under wine on linux for 7 years or so. Like you quicken was the last thing holding me back from a completely windows free pc until I got it working under wine.
Its not perfect but it gets the job done. Just check the wine compatibility matrix at winehq for your particular version. Some work better than others for some reason. If that doesn't work there is also VirtualBox which lets you run a full version of Windows inside of Linux. I haven't found anything that can run on a VirtualBox Windows install. Still need a valid windows license for this option though.
Of course if moneydance had this feature, neither of us would have to worry about it ;~)

Add my vote for this feature as well. I am looking to switch from Windows Quicken and really love the ability to see future balances by date that include the transaction detail.

Mark me down as another Quicken hostage because of the calendar feature... It's the only reason I still use the bloated, laggy, screen flickery piece of crap.
I kinda wish the bank that I pay all my bills out of would just add a feature like this to their website... then i wouldn't even need to bother downloading transactions, but I'm not holding my breath for that.

i have purchased MD. I was using Quicken Essential in which I am very disappointed. The user manual says to use Export in QE and choose QIF format. THERE IS NO QIF FORMAT OFFERED, only QXF or CSV. Will either of these work to transfer data to MD? If not, how do I convert to QIF?
19 Posted by jbnyt on 22 Apr, 2011 11:49 AM
@James Kessler, have you read this thread http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/switching-from-quicken/229...? MD has a special converter for Quicken Essentials. It looks like post 64 has some good info but you may want to read through the entire thread.

Please add my vote.
Having tested both the Reminder Calendar and Forecaster, I have the following comments to make. Bear in mind that it is critical for a financial tool to have the ability to forecast accurately (to the penny, for me!) with reminders taken into account, and to see a historical record of balances. A forecaster and the reminders must be integrated, not separate.
If those functions are added, Moneydance will be a fantastic product. Thank you.

Biggest thing holding me back from going all in on MD. Current annual Quicken subscriber wishing to go cross platform and would love to annually support MD, but gotta have this feature!
22 Posted by Tom M on 31 Oct, 2011 05:15 PM
Please add my vote to this option also. I also recently switched to MD and am sorely disappointed that this is not a feature as it is in Quicken. the simple ability to see a running balance in the Reminders calendar allows you to plan forward your daily balance in the checking account. I actually wish I looked a little closer at the screenshots of MD before deciding to buy. That was the only thing that I loved about Quicken.
Is there an update to this thread?
Support Staff 23 Posted by Ben Spencer on 02 Nov, 2011 01:15 PM
There is no update at this time. Given the popularity of the suggestion I have marked the ticket such that it will be discussed by the developers for MD2012.

I've been a Quicken user for over 10 years. The financial calendar is the ONLY thing stopping me from going 100% Mac. I keep updating my (and using) my Windows on my Mac so I can keep using the latest and greatest Windows Quicken software. It's a pain and a waste of money. I will wholely support if the financial calendar is implemented.
27 Posted by Ruth Rogers on 04 Nov, 2011 12:17 AM
Oh, pleasepleaseplease make it happen! I am SO tired of having to boot
a Windoze partition to manage my finances! I absolutely, positively
will buy MD if you implement a Quicken-style calendar feature. It's
the ONLY thing holding me back.

Hi all,
I'm the developer who wrote the forecaster extension mentioned a couple of times in this thread. I'm just chipping in to respond to the comments made by Paddy regarding the 'major flaws' with the forecaster. By the way, Paddy has been very proactive in tracking down a bug in the forecaster and I very much appreciate his help. This is just to provide corrections to his statements regarding features that I'm sure he is not yet aware of.
So I hope that information helps make the forecaster more useful. I must also point out that I'm not trying to promote the forecaster in favour of first-class support for forecasting as part of the main application. I fully support the enhanced features requested for the reminder calendar. I believe forecasting should be a first-class feature of Moneydance rather than a separate extension developed by someone in their spare time.
29 Posted by Gary on 02 Feb, 2012 03:07 AM
This is the main feature I have been looking for in ANY Quicken alternative...and have yet to find.
