Import securities tickers directly from downloaded OFX files.

Hello,

I am looking for a personal finance software and is currently testing MD. I have an account at InteractiveBrokers and I am trying to import my transactions from IB to MD.

The import of an OFX file seems to work fine. I use "Stock quote synchronizer' to update the stock prices but the update does not work. To make it work I need to manually edit each security in my portfolio to set up a the ticker name. This makes MD useless for me since I intend to update my account using a monthy download file and I have to many new trades per month to do manual updates.

I notice that the OFX file from IB contains a 'seclist' containing the stock tickers. Could MD import automatically the stock tickers from the OFX file?

Here is an extract of the OFX files containing the stock ticker that should be imported in MD :

<SECLIST>
    <STOCKINFO>
        <SECINFO>
            <SECID>
                <UNIQUEID>039483102</UNIQUEID>
                <UNIQUEIDTYPE>CUSIP</UNIQUEIDTYPE>
            </SECID>
            <SECNAME>ADM ARCHER-DANIELS-MIDLAND CO</SECNAME>
            <TICKER>ADM</TICKER>
            <FIID>4165</FIID>
        </SECINFO>
    </STOCKINFO>
    <STOCKINFO>
        <SECINFO>
            <SECID>
                <UNIQUEID>025334103</UNIQUEID>
                <UNIQUEIDTYPE>CUSIP</UNIQUEIDTYPE>
            </SECID>
            <SECNAME>ADY AMERICAN DAIRY INC</SECNAME>
            <TICKER>ADY</TICKER>
            <FIID>35636034</FIID>
        </SECINFO>
    </STOCKINFO>

Please come back to me on that. I would very much like to use MD as my personal finance software as I find it very simple to use. I like the main page with all the accounts and the graphs. But it is useless for me without this feature since I have to many transactions in my broker account.

Kind regards,
Olivier

    Oliver,

    Sorry for the late response. I sent this on the developers and they tell me the next update will set the ticker symbol automatically for those those securities that don't have it set already.

    I am glad you intend to implement this functionality. I have been searching for a log time a personal finance software that allows to import simply IB transactions. When do you plan to deliver your next update? Is it possible to be part of the beta users?

    Oliver,

    Our beta builds are available to all of our users, and can be found here. I would expect the next beta to be released in the next month, but I don't have a more specific target than that. Our lead developer is located in Charlottesville, Va, which has recently been bombarded by a series of serious and destructive storms. I think we will likely release the next beta in far less than a month, but the weather has certainly put a serious crimp in power and internet connections in our area.

    Please let me know if I can be of further assistance, and thank you for sticking with us which we work to implement this important feature.

    I'd like to second this request. I've got dozens of trades a day, and I need a seamless way to import new stocks on a regular basis. I've also got hundreds of investments to import and a manual imput of ticker symbols would be very tedious and error prone.

    As soon as this feature shows up in MD, I'll buy a copy.

    I would also like to vote for this feature. It is very very annoying to have to manually update the tickers. Most finance software I have used before will automatically guess the ticker. Even if it gets 50% of them right and the other 50% wrong it will be better than now.

    Did this ever happen, I just downloaded the trial of MD and have the same problem with no ticker symbols so no stock prices.

    It is dependent on whether your financial institution uses QIF or the newer QFX format for downloading transactions. I know when I download from Sharebuilder I get the ticker symbols attached (they use (QFX) and when I download from Fidelity, I don't (they use QIF).

    Usually you can go to a financial institutions website and retrieve a downloadable file and will be prompted to which format. You can they see if they offer QFX.
