Distinguishing transactions that have been matched upon online import

When transactions are matched during online banking import, that status is not kept in any way that the user can distinguish. It would be nice if (perhaps optionally) matched transactions could be set to "reconciling". This is essentially what Quicken does, and it is really helpful to be able to, at a glance, pick out lagging checks, and better predict near-future balances.

Also, what ARE the matching criteria?? I know date is involved and of course amount, but sometimes transactions with the identical date and amount, but incomplete description or memo, are ignored in matching. I realize this is "safe", but could these not be "possible matches". Couldn't this be configurable as a preference item also?

Thanks!

One more comment. Thinking about it again, I realize that not only matching downloaded transactions should be marked "Reconciling", but ALL accepted downloaded transactions. The point is to be able to distinguish at a glance between transaction that you and the bank agree on already, and those that you manual enter that are, as yet, unknown to the bank.

And can you please answer the question about matching criteria?

Vger, I think I may have replied to you regarding this elsewhere. I apologize if I have not. We are completely re-working how transaction matching is handled in MD 2009. The process will hopefully be both more efficient and accurate.

A big thumbs up for this suggestion for two reasons:

First, one of Quicken's few very useful features was how it handled downloaded transactions. Transactions were marked as uncleared (blank), cleared (c), or Reconciled (R) (note past tense). On any given day I could download, match, and accept transactions, which were automatically marked as "cleared". Sorting by status, (reconciled, then cleared, then uncleared) I could glance at the balance after the last cleared transaction and it should match my online balance. This is very helpful in monitoring activity, or discovering an EFT that I forgot to enter.

Secondly, to avoid BoA's $9.95 online banking fee, I download manually from their website. To avoid duplicate transactions, you must use a date range. Again, sorting by status allows me to note the date of the last cleared transaction, and use that as the start of the date range for my next download.

I hope MD can change the transaction status system. I find "reconciling" unuseful, and the use of "Cleared" for reconciled transactions confusing.

    Thanx
