Parent Account Generalization
I would like to be able to set the "parent" of any one of my accounts be any other defined account. regardless of account type. That way, I can get home page subtotaling the way I would like to see it, for instance, bank retirement CD's and investments.

This is a change that I believe we can make in a future release of Moneydance. Thank you for the suggestion. Brian Moneydance Support

Agreed. This would make it much easier to group accounts by country (living abroad currently) or by person (my accounts / wife's accounts). Would vote for this one if there was a ticket for it.

Since the trac system is no longer being used, should this discussion be open until this is implemented or a decision is made not to implement it? Or how is best for end-users (like me) to see the latest status?

I'd like to add my voice in favor. I am particularly annoyed by the separation of income and expenses at the top level. I'm currently tracking three businesses (micro-sized but still relevant for tax purposes) and also have investment income. I would much prefer that each of these be a parent account/category rather than having to duplicate each in income and expenses.
Allowing such mixing would not prevent reports which separate them rigorously, which I assume is needed in some contexts.

I recently did a quick look at "Money4" beta. It has a "smart" account feature that could replace the need (user configurable sub-totaling) for the more generalized "parent" accounts I have been asking for. It might also be easier to add to MD and more useful for other purposes too.
Basically, it allows a user to make virtual account (appear as real accounts in terms of program handling) of desired real accounts and/or transactions based on user specified rules, or filters. The rules and filters work like typical email junk rules, i.e. "if payee includes xyz" and "category is ccc" include in this virtual account, etc.

While avp2's followup suggestion would be a powerful capability, I suspect it would be far too complex for most users. After all, how many email users write their own filters, even extremely simple ones?

Its the same way that iTunes makes smart playlists. Very useful - gets my vote. :)

The lack of this feature is the only thing keeping me from migrating to MD from Gnucash. I need the ability to sort accounts more specifically such as: BANK>Bank Checking>ING Electric Orange for example. Gnucash gives the ability to drill down many levels with what they refer to as "Placeholder" designations for accounts that are above.
