Can MD Merge Categories???
Hello,
I'm reorganizing all my categories (to eventually create a budget) and was wondering if there is a way to merge multiple categories into a single category?
Thanks,
Jack

The find and replace extension will allow you to find all transactions with the old category, and do a mass replace with the new category. It will also let you visibly see what is going to happen before you commit the change. The latest release is 1.32 I believe.
Also, It is possible without the extension. Sort the register on category, scroll to the first record for the old category, then go to the last one and do "shift select" to select them all then right click and do a "batch change" to the new category.
I prefer the find and replace extension, but YMMV.

Alternatively you can move all the transactions in one category into another using batch change.
Go into the transaction register for the category you want to remove. Do this by selecting Tools->Edit Categories and then double clicking on a category. Select all the transactions in the category (ctrl-A). Right click on the selected transactions and select Batch Change->Account and select the category you want to move them into.

But if you select batch change->Category, all h*** breaks loose. I misread your post and ended up with two categories that referenced each other as if they were accounts. It was really confusing until I realized what I had done. I had to back through the categories and re-assign them to the correct accounts, then rename the category. Yes, this was operator error, but a genuine 'merge category' command would be much more clear.

I am sorry you misread my post. I agree it is confusing. When you are in the register for an income or expense category your are looking at the transactions from the reverse direction. Which is to say the "category" becomes the bank account and the "account" is the register you are in which is the category. As a rule of thumb the category is always the other side of the transaction and the account is the register you are looking at.
I have attached a suggestion ticket to this discussion to add a merge category feature. By posting in this discussion you have voted for the ticket.

I have tried both these methods and get no results? The total amounts listed under tools>categories remain the same and the new category shows 0 total?

If you go into the new category register do you see any of the transactions you tried to move here?
Are you certain that your did a "batchChange-Account" and not a "batchChange->Category". If you are in the register for a category and out want to move the transactions to a different category you need to do a batchChange->account as described above.

Sorry your response ended up in spam. I did get this problem resolved by purchasing and activating and using the find and replace method Moneydance though I may have done something differently that allowed it too work.
I am now having trouble getting the online banking - Bill payment to work
I have authorized the service on the chase website but can't get the program to send payee information?
I am in Milwaukee, wi using a MAC leopard 10.6.8

Hi boehme8642,
I've responded regarding the problems you are having with Chase on the other private discussion that you started. Since debugging this will involve logs, we should continue the conversation there.
