Transfer shares between accounts
Just started using MD2010 and I've noticed that I can't transfer shares between investment accounts. I've read the forum and it's been acknowledged that MD can't do this for some reason. Unfortunately this might be a dealbreaker for me (coupled with the inability to copy transactions--if I could copy then I might be able to do a workaround by buying/selling each lot in the account transfer pair). What I don't understand though is how shares transfer is handled for imported transactions. It seems like a category account is created for the security and transfers are somehow hardcoded and can't be edited or recreated. Can someone explain this? It seems like it's possible to transfer shares during an import but not manually enter this type of transaction. The only thing that comes close is a SellXfr with the number of shares at $0 or the basis price to zero out the category account. But I'm not sure how this will impact capital gains tracking and lot tracking.

I am not going to suggest it. I ran MD & Q2005 in parallel until 12/31. At that point I stopped using Q. In April when Q came out for Lion I blew the $15 to install it and open my file to see if I could correct a few items that came up with a category of "error" during the transfer.
Fortunately I could resolve these few items. But when Q2011 automatically updated share prices it trashed the file. Q2011 still has a limit on the number of quotes on a security and if you exceed that number (2375) it will silently and very very badly corrupt your file beyond all recognition. The first version had a lot of bugs and would crash the newer one just tells me that my file is now corrupt and no way to fix it.
Intuit may or may not ever come out with a decent featured version for the Mac. But this recompiled release has the markings of a stop gap measure. Anything worthwhile from Intuit is vapor ware. I was a 13 year user of Q and I am frustrated with MD in many respects but do not want to go back to Q.
