Can I copy and paste transactions as in Quicken?

    Hi

I am afraid Moneydance does not have such a feature.

If what you are trying to achieve is a repeat transaction you can create a transaction reminder from an existing transaction by right clicking on a transaction and selecting memorize from the context menu.

    Ben,

Thanks but it looks like memorized transactions can only work in the
future not back into the past. I'm trying to add several automatic
transaction to add estimated cash payments to the past several months,
without having to do the entries, including many splits, repeatedly.
This seems like a simple feature -- says a guy who can't program
anything -- and would be a nice add in the future.

    Thanks for your response.

    Mike

    Hi Mike

There is an existing suggestion ticket for this. Here is the link:

    http://moneydance.com/trac/ticket/37

Its been around for a horrendous amount of time and has received quite a bit of support. I'll check in with the developer about why this feature has not been implemented yet. In the mean time you can vote on the ticket if you log into trac to show your support for it.

    Sincerely

I would also like to support the ability to duplicate a transaction. Sometimes you have several different detailed transactions to the same payee. When the payee is typed in, only the most recently saved comes up. It would be nice to choose which one you want without having to open that transaction, change it, resave it, then begin typing in order to have it come up. It's a feature of Quicken that I still miss even though I gave up Q over 4 years ago.

And BTW, I have yet been able to enter anything on trac even though I'm logged in. I keep on getting warnings in geek language I cannot interpret.

    Hi drsfg,

I would also like to support the ability to duplicate a transaction.

Is this what you're looking for?

    Right click > Duplicate Transaction.

Yes, this works! But, for the life of me, why aren't these items a part of the drop down menus? Why are they hidden?

Also, is this duplication ability in the manual? I couldn't find it. That's why I asked the question in the first place.

    Thank you.

Now, if we could move transactions between accounts!

You are correct the right click menu does not seem to be covered in the manual. I have spoken with our technical writer about getting this added.

You can move a transaction (or group of selected transactions) to a different account by right clicking on it and selecting Batch Change->Account.

See now that you mentioned it, I now remember doing this in the past. And it does work, but because it's not in the drop down menus, I lost track of it. Again, why are these vital procedures hidden? Why can't they be incorporated into the drop down menus, in the open, where everyone can see them? I've been using Macintoshes since Mac OS 7.5. I'm sorry but this seems very un-Mac like. It's more akin to the old MS-DOS way of using 3-4 key combos in order to do a procedure. Can I suggest this be changed in the next major upgrade?

The developers strive to make the UI both functional and attractive. There is a question of space when placing the various menus and hence the use of the right click option.

Moneydance is cross platform and the design is based on that. I am a mac user and I use a 3 button mouse, mostly because I use a lot of cross platform applications.

I agree the documentation should be more clear about the right click menus and that is being rectified.

We're talking about 13 functions spread over 5 menus, the longest right now only having 12 lines. That would add about two lines to each menu (essentially). It doesn't appear, at least to me, that this would interfere with the functionality and attractiveness of the UI. In fact the increased visibility of these functions would increase the program's functionality, IMHO. Looking at Microsoft Word, the drop downs are double, sometimes even triple in length.

I'm not a programmer, just a user, i.e., the one using (and buying) the product. But if you ask my colleagues, I'm a more sophisticated user than they are. If I'm concerned about ease here, what do the simple Joes and Janes out there make of this?
