how to enter and track the price of an aggregated investment fund
Hi all,
I just started a 529 plan for my son's college savings through
Smart529 Select, and ended up using the 0-3yr portfolio, which is a
mixture of
5% DFA Emerging Markets core Equity DFCEX
20% DFA International Core Equity DFIEX
75% DFA US Core Equity 2 DFQTX
However, these three funds are aggregated by the 529 company, which then gives a single price, and sells shares of this aggregate fund. As far as I know, there is no single ticker symbol to represent this exact mix. Currently, I can download from the 529 account a list of investments that give the aggregate share price and number of shares (and hence, number of $). But moneydance can't calculate the value of the investment, since there is no single ticker symbol.
My ideas are:
- Create a recurring split so that every "buy" transaction is actually investing at the above ratios in those three fund. But I can't seem to do a split on the investment register at that point.
- Give up on having the price updated automatically and pretend that this aggregated portfolio is a single stock (which it is for the purposes of the investment company!). I wouldn't be able to have moneydance automatically update the share price, though.
Any ideas on how to handle this?
Thanks!

Hi Andy,
Unfortunately I don't think it's currently possible to to track it other than an aggregated portfolio. It's not possible to do split transactions in the register of an Investment account, so unfortunately that rules out that option.
I'm going to consult with the rest of our staff regarding this to see if someone has a better solution than this, but I do think that there's probably not a better way.

Hi Andy,
Since the inherent nature of a 529 plan is that of a long term investment and you have no control over the allocation of the aggregated fund, personally I would treat it as singular entity.
For performance tracking purposes, I would probably enter a weekly NAV manually. There is a free extension offered by Songline Software that may make the price entry process a little more streamlined.
