Problem with autocomplete on Mac
This comment was split from the discussion: How to turn off auto complete
I am having a terrible problem with autofill under MAC OSX Lion (and Snow Leopard before that). An example: Enter a new category named CD, but make a mistake and enter CC. When you hit the delete key it deletes the erroneous C but when D is entered autofill "corrects it" and changes back to CC. The only way to fix this is to edit the category. There is another problem where if for instance you wanted a new category named "CD bank" but already had category "CD", then autofill will only allow CD to be entered. This must be a MAC only problem or you Windows people would be loudly protesting.

Hi Bruce,
I've split off your question so as to lower the noise from the other discussion. When autocomplete operates for me and I enter the wrong name, I have to hit delete once to enter the autocomplete data, then hit it again to correct the mistaken letter I typed--does that not work for you?

I think I have a related problem. When I set up a new transaction, the program fills in a category by default -- I think it's the alphabetically first one in my category list. How do I blank out that category? I can hit the Delete key, but then when I enter Tab or Return or whatever, that default category is right back.
Way down in my category list, I do have a blank one, so I can scroll all the way down and use that as the category. But that's a pain. I'd like to inform the program to use a blank category as the default. I couldn't find anything in the preferences or user guide about it. Please advise!

Hi mfeldman,
Each transaction has to have a category associated with it. If you'd like to use a blank category, however, this is possible to do. First, create a blank category and set the preferences you want for it (expense, currency, etc). Then go to Tools -> Accounts, then click on the account you want to have a blank category, then click the "Edit" button and change the "Default Category" to the blank one you created.
Please let us know if we can be of further assistance!

Thanks for the prompt reply. I already had a blank category, but hadn't discovered the ability to specify a default category. That's exactly what I need! Works fine.

Hello Scott,
Your suggestion given below does not work, Please remember I am using Lion on a MAC, so perhaps that is why you have not seen this error. I just went back and reproduced the error. Entering CC, which was to be a new category, autofill added a D making it CD...not what I wanted. Following your suggestion I hit delete once, then hit it again. Once again autofill gave me the wrong (CD) category. Can you check this out on a MAC?
Many Thanks, Bruce Gotwols

Bruce Gotwols,
What you are trying to accomplish cannot be done. It is not an error.
You can't create new Categories, "on the fly", while in your ledger.
The only way to create a new Category is to go to Tools > Categories > New.

Hi Bruce,
Sorry for the misunderstanding. James f is correct--Moneydance currently doesn't support creating new categories "on the fly", only through the categories editor in Tools -> Categories. There is a thread requesting the addition of category creation on the fly here:
