Yes.
Open Moneydance on your current computer, select File - Save As, and save it to an external device such as a USB Flash Drive / Thumdrive, External Hard Drive, or networked Hard Drive.
Open Moneydance on your laptop, select File - Open, select the external device, then select your .md data file. From then on out, Moneydance will look for your .md data file on that external device when you run Moneydance. I suggest keeping it that way.
I suggest keeping your .md data file on an external device for two main reasons:
1. In the event of an internal Hard Drive failure, you won't lose your .md data file.
2. In the event that you should travel with your laptop, your financial information will be safe, in the event that you should lose your laptop or it should get stolen.
In any event, I would suggest that you DO NOT keep your .md data file on the hard drive of your laptop.
I keep my .md data file on a USB Flash Drive / Thumdrive. It works just fine.
With a networked External Hard Drive, you can access your .md data file from either computer. Just, not at the same time.
And, by the way, you do not need a new license key to run Moneydance off of your laptop. Just input your license key into Moneydance on your laptop.

Hi Clinton,
I use Dropbox to store the datafile (.MD) which means I can access it by whichever computer I choose to use, even when travelling with a laptop. This protects against the loss of a USB memory stick as well ;-))
As a last resort, if my own computer were stolen, I could also install the application on a friend's machine and still have all my data up to date.
Hope this helps, Iain.

iain.davidson,
Your suggestion is fine and dandy, however, if your laptop were ever stolen or lost, somebody would then have access to all of your financial records, including name of your Bank, account numbers, routing numbers, everything.
Dropbox keeps a copy of your data file in it's local folder on your laptop as well as on it's website.
That really is not an ideal suggestion of using DropBox on a laptop computer. Especially if you travel with it.

Clinton,
All of the advice above about moving Moneydance your Moneydance data file is excellent, and exactly what I would have advised. You should also download Moneydance and install it on your new computer from here, and register it using your current license key. If you no longer have your key, you can retrieve it using our key finder tool here.
I personally use Dropbox to store my Moneydance data file, and keep it encrypted using the Triple Bit DES option to keep myself protected in case my laptop is ever stolen. It's not a perfect option, but after losing a lot of important data from a hard drive crash a few years ago I really appreciate the automatic backup Dropbox offers.
Good luck with your new computer, and please let me know if I can be of further assistance,

Hi James,
You're right - I had completely forgotten the copy on the local disk - its that seamless in operation!
And as Angie notes, I also use a long complex password with the DES option just in case...
I find that another advantage of Dropbox is that I can work when out of wi-fi coverage, and let it sync when I get home.
All the best, Iain
