Reconcile accounts

Is there a way to go back and look at previous reconciliations. When I went into an account to reconcile it the beginning balance was off by $700.00. I have unreconciled the previous period and it is still off by the same amount. I don't want to go back and unreconcile every period until I find the mistake. I did notice that when I was reconciling a credit card account the payment from the bank account had a green check mark in the C column even though I had not reconciled that account yet for that period. Thanks

    David,

There is no way to go back and open past reconciliations. My suggestion is run a transaction report and look for either a $700 transaction or a $350 transaction which was entered as a deposit rather than payment or vice versa.

One of our support staff devised a useful tool for keeping track of reconciliations, I've laced it below with the screen shot referenced.

"I have a tool I personally use (because I can be both neurotic and careless in equal measure with my reconciling) to help me easily track reconciliation issues. Every time I reconcile an account I record a transaction like the one below (see screenshot). If I ever have balance/reconciliation issues I can easily glance back at these transactions to determine if the issue is related to an old or new transaction- such as if I accidentally deleted an old transfer when cleaning up a closed account, or just incorrectly entered a new transaction."

I began to use MD 1 year ago. Every month my statement is reconciled to the MD account. The November 30 ending balance on my bank statement equaled the MD account. When I opened the reconcile window to balance the December statement the beginning amount is different (has changed) from the ending November.

Thinking I'd changed/deleted a transaction, I checked every statement for 2011. The bank statement ending figure is the same on the MD account.

What caused the amount on the reconcile window to change?

I don't want to carry forward this difference.

    Hi c2tuck,
The Beginning Statement Balance is calculated by the sum total of the 'Initial Balance' and all 'Cleared' txns.
If you had inadvertently Cleared or Un-Cleared any txn, then this would effect the Beginning Statement Balance.
Short of that, changing the 'Initial Balance' would be the only other way to effect it. Except of course, deleting a txn.

I understand what you're saying but
The ending January 2011 balance on my statement = the ending january balance on MD and so forth for every month until November 2011. . If a txn has been chenged : then the balances would not longer be the same, right?

If I've changed a transaction, how do you suggest I find it? I don't know where else to look.

    Thanks

    Hi c2tuck,

Since the discrepancy occurs with the November statement a careful sde by side comparison to your November statement is where you should start.

While viewing the account in question, try entering the amount of the discrepancy into the 'Search' field in the upper right-hand corner. See if the results shed any light onto this issue.

Again, if the 'Beginning Statement Balance' for your December reconcile is different than what the November end balance was, then there are a few possiblities:
A txn was marked 'Cleared' that should not have been.
A txn was marked 'Un-cleared that should not have been.
    A "Cleared' txn was deleted.
    A 'Cleared' txn was added.
    The 'Initial Balance' was changed.
