Categories
I have just switched from Q2009 to Moneydance. I am unclear on how to use Categories. I see that each category collects entries continually not on an annual basis. How do you get the category to only reflect what has been entered annually i.e 1/1/2009 - 12/31/2009 and 1/1/2010 - 12/31/2010. When I look at a category it has transaction from when I started until the current day,

Hi Dave,
If I understand you correctly, the information that you are trying to obtain should be able to be gleaned from either the Transactions Report or the Search Report.

Kevin is right. The categories hold all the transactions ever made. It must keep the history of your transactions to calculate your current balances going forward.
You can use the edit button on both the search report and transaction report to specify the category and dates you wish.

Thanks for the answer. I have been out of town and did not get to my mail
until today. My question or should I say desire is to have the categories
reflect the annual (1/1/xx - 12/31/xx) YTD totals. They really don't mean
much to me as a running total. Can I sort them to reflect this info on the
sidebar or can I transport the transactions, other than current year, to
another non displayed category with out corrupting the file data?
Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave
I completely agree. The category balances should only display the running total for the current year. I have created a ticket for this suggestion in issue tracking system ans attached it to this discussion.
The current work around would be to archive the old years by selecting File->Archive.
I strongly suggest making a backup of your data file before running the archive process.
