Investment Report Functionality

I just entered 12 years' worth of dividends for two Vanguard mutual funds so that I could have accurate investment reports with information I used to have in Quicken.

Does MD provide:

  1. CostBasis/Share
  2. Amount Invested
  3. Gain/Loss
  4. Return
  5. ROI (as percentage)

All I see in MD is:

  1. Shares
  2. Price (Daily Closing Price)
  3. Current Value (Market Value)
  4. Cost Basis (looks like Amount Invested but it's off because of problems with lots*)
  5. % change (not ROI because it isn't including dividends and interest)

I'm wondering in particular why MD is showing a loss for a particular fund when there actually is a gain, but only if dividends have been included. (IOW, my cost basis/share is lower than the current cost per share, but the real return over time (interest and dividends) should be a positive ROI rather than a loss.)

*I am also having trouble choosing lots when there are small sales each year to meet fees.

Thx.

Have you checked out the reports section. Most of what you are asking for is in the investment performance report. The cost basis per share is lacking and I am putting a ticket in to the developers about that. You can access the total cost basis and share count in both the security detail window and the cost basis report. The cost basis report has a breakdown of each purchase including dividends.

The showing a loss on dividend stocks is normal if the share price falls below the dividend reinvestment price. A dividend reinvestment is considered a buy and affects the cost basis of the stock. Dividends are taxable and so are the cap gains on the reinvestment when sold. So if the dividend reinvestment share price is greater than the current price, then it can appear as a loss even though the current total is greater than the initial buy. The idea is that if you had kept the dividends in cash would the combination of dividends plus initial investment be the same, less, or greater than the reinvested total.

As to matching lots you can choose the "avg cost" option. If you are an active trader this does lessen your ability to manage your taxable income through lot matching.

I need a report showing dividends received over several years from one security of several. The dividend entries are within the ABC Broker Investment account and were automatically reinvested. What I have I can see on the screen "Investments>ABC Stockbroker>WXY Stock>Securities Detail" is what I need to print.

    FYI
The inaccuracy in various investment performance reports is one of the glaring annoyances with Moneydance. See for example

    and

As far as I can tell a fix for these issues does not appear to be a high priority as they've been around for awhile.

    Frank,

I've been looking for a way to report the data as you wish and can't find a solution. I agree this would be a good utility. I am putting in a suggestion ticket to allow editing for security and action in the investment transaction report.

    Frank,

A new extension has been created that allows a raw dump on investment transactions to a spreadsheet. This may allow you to gather the information you wish.

From the toolbar, go to extensions > manage extension. Scroll down until you get to the investment report extension and install it.

You should then be able to dump your investment activity into a spreadsheet and sort for the dividends and security.

    Where?
I ran MoneyDance and dropped down Extensions and do not see manage extension.
I went to Add and do not see Investment Report in the list.

Thanks for the quick fix, when I find. it.
My preferred solution would be an individual securities report within Moneydance.

On Moneydance build 757 select Extensions->Add...

Select "From the internet" and click "Next"

The item is called "Extra Investment Reports"

    Thanks.
This report gets me where I want to be, but with more hoops than wanted.
I get a report of all transactions between dates then need to cull the data not wanted. It assumes I have a spreadsheet program (I do) and it assumes I am able to use it (I am).

Because it assumes use of another program the solution is not efficient, but works.

First, I used the extension, it allowed me to specify a folder for the reports, and told me that they were run. However, for the life of me I cannot find them. It's actually a bit spooky since I was running a program/applet or whatever that accesses sensitive information and I cannot tell what it did. Please let me know it is safe and how to find the report!

Secondly, I agree that we really need the ability to generate investment reports from within MD. This, as many of noted, is a glaring problem with MD. enlywI notice that the last activity here was last Sept. I hope that we will see improvements in this area before too many more moons.

This is a repeat statement, but belongs here. Capital Gains and losses marked long term and short term and netted in each category should be a part of a proper Income & Expenses report in Moneydance.

To do this report proper handling of cost basis is basic.

I agree with Moneydance explaining that purchasing a new lot of a stock, or a Fund, through dividend reinvestment changes the cost basis. Two things. First I have an tax event receiving a dividend. Second, I have a cost basis for that purchase of the stock or fund.
