Advanced search does not include an option for searching by category. Description, check#, memo and tags can be set as criteria but not category. What gives? And how can I search by category and date for instance?

    Hi Dick

In Moneydance the word category is interchangeable with the work account. Categories are infact accounts with their own registers. They provide the other side of transfers to income or expense accounts. You can select an income or expense account/category in the account field of advanced search just as you would select a bank account. What you cannot do in the advanced search is say show me all the transactions that are in expense account/category X that are also in bank account Y. To do that you should run a detailed income and expense report by selecting Tools->Graphs and Reports.

Just a suggestion for improving the software interface: in the Advanced Search dialog box that comes up, the term "Account:" should be replaced by the term "Account/Category:" to indicate what you have explained above.

I would recommend adding a separate search for category, instead of lumping it together with account. I would also recommend being able to do a multi-select of categories. For example, I have a category of Charitable Donations with numerous subcategories for different organizations. If I want to do a search by Charitable Donations, I want to pull all the subcategories also.

    Hi Norman,
Try either of the Income and Expense reports. They give the user the ability to select individual and / or multiple Categories to generate the report.
