Security associations for downloaded transactions

I'm new to Macs (bought 1st one December '09) and MoneyDance (bought 2010r2 (735) in Feb '10). I successfully created an account for my existing Fidelity 401(k), added the securities in MD, and set up MD to download from Fidelity with my account and password. The process is working fine. However, when I first downloaded the transactions from my Fidelity account, MD asked me to match a downloaded transaction number to a security. For example, a MD window appeared and ask me to associate a security with the code "0304", or "1314". At the time, I had no idea what these codes meant, but assumed they were a code associated with each of my Fidelity securities. So I chose (guessed) a security for each code, as I'd never seen these codes before and had no idea what each one meant. Of course, I guessed wrong, so now each time I download my 401(k) transactions -- every two weeks when I get paid -- the transactions come through with all the correct information (date, # of shares) except each transaction is associated with the wrong security. I'm able to manually change the security for each downloaded transaction in MD, but I'd really rather correct the security that MD associated with each of these codes. But I can't find anywhere in MD where I can see -- much less modify -- these code/security associations. Any ideas?

Hi, sorry to be so late in getting back to you, it seems your query slipped through the cracks and I apologize.
Regarding your issue: Select the appropriate account, and go to Online->Setup Online Banking. From there you should be able to disable the connection, after that re-setup the connection with the appropriate account settings.
Please let me know if this helps and if you have any further questions,
    Sincerely,

I saw something similar to this - appreciate the workaround - but this is rather ugly. Especially if it happens again if you add a new security .....

This did not appear to work. I disabled the account as instructed, then re-established the on-line account info. However, when I downloaded transactions, MD didn't ask me to associate a security with a numeric code as it did the first time I enabled the on-line access for this account. MD appears to have remembered the initial associations.

And I hope I haven't complicated things, but I did upgrade to MD 2010r3 (750) prior to disabling and re-enabling on-line access for this account.

    Hi, Angie.

As you saw, I am using the latest MD version, and am running Mac OS 10.6.4. As for what version of Java I have, I believe I'm running 13.2.0. That is what I found in the system profiler. If I need to look elsewhere on my Mac for the Java version please let me know, as I do not know where else to look.

It's seems like Moneydance is again having trouble "forgetting" your old connection information. To fix this, you'll need to force clear all of your current connection information in Moneydance. I've attached a file that will help do that. Before proceeding, please back up your Moneydance file, just in case something goes wrong. So far, this hasn't caused any problems, but better safe than sorry!

To use the file, first save it to your computer and then follow these steps:

    1) In Moneydance, click on the Extensions Menu and choose the "Add..." option
    2) In the window that pops up, make sure the "From Internet" option is selected and then click next.
    3) From the list of available extensions, choose the "python scripting interface" extension, then click Next to download the extension and finish to complete the installation.
    4) Again, click the Extensions menu. This time, choose the "Python Interface" option.
    5) In the python scripting window, click the "read from file" button and load the file from whereever you saved it. You won't get any confirmation of anything happening, but you also shouldn't get any error messages. Close the window when done.
    6) Set up the connection to your bank like normal. Since all of your settings have been cleared, you should get the most recent connection information for your bank.

Hopefully, that will work. Let us know if you still have trouble after using this fix.

    Ms. LIttle,

Thank you for your assistance. I will try this procedure this weekend and let you know the results. I can't try until this weekend because I get paid every two weeks, so my 401(k) purchase (of which the downloading of those transaction is the source of this issue) won't happen again until July 31st.

Just to be sure I'm clear, in your e-mail you said you attached a file to help force clear all current connections. Your original message did not have an attachment, but it did have a link to the following code:

    root = moneydance.getRootAccount()
    onlineInfo = root.getOnlineInfo()
    while onlineInfo.getServiceCount()>0:
      onlineInfo.removeService(0)
I presume that I am to save this code in a file (I accepted my computer's default of "remove_all_service.py) and use that file in step 5 of the procedure below.

    Thanks again for your help.

This did not work. When I re-established the on-line account information for this account in MD, it still associates the downloaded transactions with the wrong security.

I apologize for the delay, this is quite a stumper. Would you be willing to send me a data file containing the problem account(s) so I can see what might be going on? I'm also asking our developer to weigh in, hopefully he's have some advice too.

You can email the file directly to me at angie (at) moneydance (dot) com so it is not visible in this public forum. Thank you for bearing with us as we work to diagnose this issue.

    David,

When Moneydance first sees an unrecognized security in an OFX file, it asks which moneydance security (if any) it is. You choose the wrong entry, that security will forever be associated with the wrong security ID when importing OFX files.

Our developer has written a little script that will reset all of the bindings of Moneydance securities to OFX security IDs. Could you try to run this script and then attempt an import of an OFX file with those securities? This script will fix the problem for any subsquent imports/downloads, but will not affect any previously downloaded transactions. For that, you could either create a new data file, or delete and re-download any incorrect transactions (assuming you can download transactions that far back... however far back that is). I've attached the script to this case. Please make a backup of your data file before attempting this process. I have no reason to suspect anything will go wrong, but in the realm of personal finances I believe it is better to be safe than sorry.

You will run this script by repeating steps 4 and 5 of Jessica's instructions of post 7 above, then re-downloading transactions related to these stocks.

I hope this helps, and I'm sorry that it took us so long to find a solution. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance, and certainly let me know if this succeeds!

    Hello, Angie.

I tried this one more time (running the script to reset the bindings and
remove the security associations for my 401(k) account in MD), as it was
time for my every-two-week downloading of the transactions for my 401(k).
The script does appear to remove the association, based on the fact that
when I try to download the transactions after running the scrip, MD asks me
(as it did at the first, initial downloading of these security transactions)
to associate the downloaded transaction with a security.

The problem now is that in the drop down list of securities I have to choose
from (to associate with the downloaded transaction), every security I have
EXCEPT the three I need from this particular account appear in the list.
The three securities I'm downloading are from Fidelity, and these three
Fidelity securities are the ones that don't show up in the list. Other
Fidelity securities that I have appear in the list, but not the three I
    need.

I checked, and after running the script, but before re-downloading and
associating the transactions, the three securities are in fact in my 401(k)
account. And after downloading the transaction to MD (with the incorrect
associations because the correct securities are not listed in the drop down
list), when I modify those downloaded transaction to associate them to the
correct securities, the three securities in question are listed in the MD
list, so I don't know why the securities don't appear in the drop down list
for when I'm trying to associated the initial download.

So I'm still stuck, and am really not sure what I should do at this point.

Can you try applying the instructions in Post 13 again? My developer tells me this really should resolve the issue. If it doesn't I'll likely ask for you to send me a data file containing the problem account so we can dig into it deeper. I apologize for the late response, it's an unusual case.

Do let me know how it goes with the python script, and we'll move forward from there. Thanks for your patience, and we'll keep working on it till we get the fix.

Ok, I tried running the 'remove_all_services.py' script again. It didn't result in what I'd hoped -- but here's what happened.

After running the script, I re-established (in MD) my on-line account for my 401(k) account by selecting 'Fidelity NetBenefits' from the drop down list for a new connection, associating it with the appropriate account in MD {MD defaulted to the correct account, by the way}, then entered my username and password info. When that was done, I manually initiated a download of the account transactions from the MD 'Online' menu. MD then proceeded to download my most recent transactions (three 12/30 dividend transactions and three 12/31 purchases). Curiously, MD did NOT ask me to associate any of the transactions with a security. This (MD not asking for an association) is new -- in all previous attempts related to this post, after running the remove_all_script.py file, MD has asked me to associate each initial downloaded transaction with a security. And as documented in my previous posts, this is where I ran into trouble because the correct securities were not available in the drop down list presented by MD for selecting an associated security.

Anyway, MD downloaded the transactions without asking for a security association. I have three active securities (i.e. am buying the same three funds each payday) at this time. The transactions that MD downloaded were correct for one of the funds; MD was wrong on the other two. The transaction description from Fidelity came through OK, and that is how I know MD associated the transaction with the wrong security within MD.

Hope this description is clear. Let me know what if anything else you'd like me to do. Thanks.

    David,

I had the same issue, my account downloaded dividends as security numbers instead of tickers and i picked the wrong stocks. To correct this go, go to the transaction in the register and double click the security field. You can edit it to the correct security.

    Hope this helps

    Hi, Tom.

Thanks for the tip. This is, in fact, what I've been doing ever since I 'chose poorly' when first associating the downloaded transactions. With only three to four transactions every two weeks for this account, editing each transaction isn't a Sisyphian task. It is just surprising (annoying?) to me that there isn't a user-accessible dialog box for settings where one can re-define the association of a downloaded transaction to a defined security.

    David,

The issue that the download comes with unique id tags and making those editable can cause a number of problems.

What i do if I am unsure of a stock id on the download is to pick the none of the above option then edit during the reconciliation process.

I'm doing my initial migration from MSMoney, and then downloading the past several months of investment activity into MoneyDance. I have well over 100 securities across 4 different investment accounts (about 80 current positions and numerous older positions that were liquidated in the period that gets downloaded).

MoneyDance doesn't seem to match any of the security names automatically because in the download they are all UPPER CASE and in the txn register they are upper and lower case. Is there any way to set case insensitivity so that it will find these security names automatically?

    Robert,

I'm not entirely sure this is possible, but what I would try is the "Remove all" script from above and downloading prices again? This will (hopefully) allow you to re-set the security associations so they match from this point forward. You will have to set the associations the first time you download. I'm sorry I don't have a more elegant solution, as your investment setup does seem quite complex. If I discover a better fix I'll definitely let you know.

I have encountered the same problem. What is frustrating is that when you download transactions (mine from Fidelity) MD gives you a code in a window and asks you to associate it with a security in a drop down list. There is no additional information such as number of shares, price, equity etc in that window that can give you clues as to which security needs to be associated with the code properly. Is there a fix for this coming?

I have had the same issue. I own a foreign ADR. When it issues a dividend, the security ID is a number-text string and not the ticker symbol. The first time I downloaded, I picked none of the above and edited then transaction in the register. Now Moneydance recognizes that id as the correct security.

It may seem counter intuitive, but its better to select none of the above and down load the transaction to the register where you can edit the transaction during the reconcilliation process.

I had this issue as well however the following worked for me:

    • In the account online setup I hit the reset sync button (to trigger a re-download)
    • I deleted all the transactions that had automatically been incorrectly assigned
    • I ran the reset_security_links.py script
    • I ran a new download

I was prompted for the security assignments again.

This is one area in Moneydance I hope to see improved. Very excited to have moved off Quicken however the brokerage/securities/checking integration is difficult to work with in this current iteration.
