How to turn off auto complete

Greetings,

I am a new user. I am finding MD to be a really good tool and meeting almost all of my needs so far.

One of the things I can't figure out is how to turn off the 'auto-complete' in the register. There doesn't seem to be anything in the Preferences area; I've tried turning off/on everything. I'm sure there's a simple solution but I don't want to spin my wheels on this.

Thank you.

    Hi

I am afraid Moneydacne does not have an option to disable the auto complete functionality. I have now created a suggestion ticket for this feature in our trac system. here is the link:

    http://moneydance.com/trac/ticket/2677

If you register and log into trac you can vote on tickets. We use those votes to help use determine what to implement next.

    Sincerely

    Ben Spencer

I agree, there needs to be a way to turn off and/or modify the text auto complete function.
It's both nice and very annoying.
When I go to edit transactions upon placing my curser in the front of the field and typing it will auto complete the entire field thus loosing the text that I was editing. It then appears that I can not do a text undo.
Has this been changed, can I turn off auto complete?
Can I access the data that auto complete uses and edit it and/or give it rules?
    Thank you,
    Mark

    Hi Mark

The auto complete cannot be disabled. I have upped the priority on the ticket suggesting this.

The auto complete function uses all other transactions currently in the register. So yes you can edit the source data by editing the other transactions.

What I recommend is that if when you are editing a description and an an auto complete is displayed press the delete key on your keyboard to remove the auto complete text. Enter or tab accepts the auto complete, delete rejects it.

I am sorry if this does not meet your needs.

    Sincerely

Yes, hitting the delete key works to delete the auto fill text but it also
deletes text that was in the field if you were editing a transaction text
    field.
It would be more functional if hitting delete would revert to the text that
was there after the curser. To take it a step a better, have hitting delete
highlight the text, then upon hitting delete again it deletes the edited
text or hitting enter keeps the edited text that is after the curser.
    Thank you,
    Mark

When I edit a description or enter a new transaction with a new description and moneydance offers an auto complete, the cursor goes to the end of the auto-completed description and the suggested part is highlighted. This means that if I hit the delete key the auto-completed text is removed but not the text that I have entered. If you are in the middle of an edit and you don't agree with the auto complete and you still have more to type just keep typing and the auto complete will go away if it nolonger matches.

When a user has a series of transactions where a given field only has minor changes, from one transaction to the next, the auto fill function is a real PITA. I see via the trac system the request to fix this is 13 months old and it has a minor priority. Very frustrating since auto complete is my major criticism of Moneydance.

    Hi Jim,
I find that tabbing into the Description field, then using the up and down arrow keys on the keybord the easiest way to select similar but different entries. Moneydance offers 10 prior entries in the drop-down list.

I would like to add my support for an option to turn off the auto complete feature. I find it takes me more time to complete an entry with the information I want for that entry, than any possible convenience it provides. It is very irritating. (I tried using your trac system to add my vote for this feature, but couldn't.)

A minor inconvenience is the inability to set my preference for the week start day independent of locale. I prefer Monday, and use French in Preferences to do it, but would prefer it in English.

Otherwise, I think MD is the best personal finance programme available.

Following up my earlier request of 31 July, PLEASE OFFER AN OPTION TO TURN OFF THE AUTO COMPLETE FEATURE. It is a royal pain, even to the point, as much as I like MD, I am beginning to re-evaluate other personal finance programmes, albeit a second choice. The auto complete feature is a GD nuisance!

MD have been promising to provide a way of turning off auto complete for over a year now. Can someone tell me when this is going to happen?

The debate on auto save has been going on for over a year with no resolution? This could be a deal breaker for me.

I too am starting to look at alternatives. It is a shame as otherwise this is such a good program, but having non relevant information coming up every time I make a new entry is just too much. I can only assume the developers have no idea how to stop auto complete but are not willing to say so. If they could do it, presumably they would have done so by now, given the negative comments about it.. Perhaps I am wrong but I am sure it didn't happen in early versions. Presumably it is something that has crept in and now won't be chased out again.

I've just fixed the bug mentioned by Mark in #6 in which auto-completion would occur even if the cursor was not at the end of the field. I apologize for that error and agree that it must have been incredibly frustrating.

As for disabling auto-completion altogether, this was an option in a much earlier version of Moneydance. It is possible to re-add a preference setting for this, however I would like to suggest different possibilities. The primary reason to not make this a preference setting is that auto-completion can be useful or not for individual transactions, so there should be a way to accept or reject auto-completions as they are happening. You should not be required to open up the preferences window, find the checkbox for enabling auto-completion, close the window and go back to entering your transaction. There should be an intuitive way to suppress auto-completion while entering a transaction. One non-intuitive way to do this is to make a small edit at the end of the description/payee field before tabbing out of the field. For example, to record a payment to Skype and suppress auto-completion, enter "Skype" (using auto-completion, if you like) then enter an extra character (such as "x") and then delete that character. Tabbing out of the description field will not auto-fill the rest of the fields. I know it is a hack, but hopefully it will help a bit until I figure out a more intuitive way to tell Moneydance not to auto-fill the rest of the fields based on the current auto-completion. I'm completely open to suggestions, but I don't think a checkbox in the preferences is convenient for most people.

    Thanks,
    Sean

    Sean,
I'm still in the evaluation phase (migrating from Quicken Windows). I was surprised to see this an other threads regarding not being able to turn off the auto-completion feature. I think the "preference" route would be the way to go since users who do not want auto-completion probably do not want it globally. (I have it turned off in Quicken for some of the reasons mentioned by others above.) Perhaps, in conjunction with a globas setting to allow auto-completion, your suggestion to be able to easily reject them on a case by case basis makes sense.

I agree that there needs to be a global way to turn off auto-complete. It isn't a useful function for me. I don't want to have to undo the auto-complete at each transaction. I really like your product so far, but this is very difficult to deal with.

Why not doing the same as the old Quicken 2004 , after the auto-completion show on, instead to jump to the next field with TAB you do an "option-TAB" and the description stay but not the rest of the transaction. The only solution I found was to type all the characters of the description minus 1, and type "del" so all the next fields are blanked.

This comment was split into a new discussion: Problem with autocomplete on Mac

I am having a terrible problem with autofill under MAC OSX Lion (and Snow Leopard before that). An example: Enter a new category named CD, but make a mistake and enter CC. When you hit the delete key it deletes the erroneous C but when D is entered autofill "corrects it" and changes back to CC. The only way to fix this is to edit the category. There is another problem where if for instance you wanted a new category named "CD bank" but already had category "CD", then autofill will only allow CD to be entered. This must be a MAC only problem or you Windows people would be loudly protesting.

Truth be told, when Intuit finally released their Lion compatible version of Quicken I jumped back into familiar territory. It works just like the old one, which is more than fine by me.
