Creating new categories on the fly

I've seen a couple of discussions where the ability or lack of capability to create new categories on the fly was discussed. However, I have not seen anywhere where it was acknowledged as an enhancement request. I don't know about most people but I find it very annoying while I'm entering a new transaction, thought of a new expense category and have to either temporarily save the transaction under some other category, go to create the expense category, come back to the transaction and then reassign the category. It's much more intuitive to allow the user to enter a new category on the fly.

BTW, I haven't seen this behavior change in MD2010 either.

Anyone else feels this way?

That's a no brainer - most other accounting programs allow you to add categories on the fly...

I appreciate that this is a popular feature request and I am sure we will get to it eventually. I am sure you understand that we get a great many feature request and we don't have the resources to implement them all.

    Sincerely

I am a bit disappointed about all those features you are talking about, as for the last year I have not seen a single update/upgrade. Whenever I check for a new version I am up-to-date.

A while back a beta version was mentioned in the forum, but I can't seem to update to that either. Do you have any timeline when the new version will be available?

Please add me to the list of users who would really appreciate the ability to enter categories while in the register or "on the fly" instead of having to go up to the drop down list. Thanks!

I don't know...I'm very new to MD, but it seems like there are some very basic functions that are necessary that just aren't in MD. I don't know how long this software has been around, but Quicken has been around as an almost perfect model on how things should work. I feel like I've jumped back 1 years in Quicken's progress now that it's gone and I am using MD.

I was forced to try Moneydance when I upgraded to Lion which made Quicken obsolete. However, Lion was so problematic for me, I've had to go back to Snow Leopard. As much as I'm trying to like MD, and there are lots of things I do like about it, I'm honestly thinking about going back to Quicken.

You should find a fincancial backer so you can make the appropriate improvements on MD to make it at least as usable as Quicken, and then better.

Definitely needs to be added as well as running totals for splits and an option to use ENTER key to advance to next field

folks, i'm sorry to say but i've really lost hope that this will ever get done i raised this request nearly 2 years ago now and there have been about 30 people also interested in this. at this stage, i'm really curious how the moneydance team prioritizes their functionality but for such a simple thing still not to get done relative to some of the other features that have been put into version 2011, it's really baffling.

i don't know if the moneydance team have any comments or insights into this

This suggestion has a very high ranking in our system and is down as a milestone for 2012r1. Ultimately it is up to the lead developer to make the decisions regarding development and design implementation.
    Thanks for your patience.

Adding categories on the fly and tabbing to the next field are by far the two features that would increase ease of use for the average user. I have owned several software companies and do not understand why this simple features have not yet been implemented. I have 6 people I know who will not switch to money dance until these re done (and I am just one person).

I understand the need to prioritize, but market research should also be a strong driver of development decisions. I have never run a company where the lead developer gets to decide what updates to make, but rather, they gee input into difficulty and options for functionality, but the decisions are then made in terms of what will grow the bottom lin of the business best over time.

    Uri,
The lead developer owns the company ;-) (We could call him lead designer, president of marketing, or whatever, its ultimately up to him and he is fully aware of the user input for this and a variety of other possible features.)

ultimately, if the owner is making decisions on what's in or out of a release, he's accountable.

it's pretty ridiculous when you look at the fact that this request was created over 2 years ago not including the time when it was in the other system before this current website. it's pretty simple and basic functionality.

if you feel as strongly as i do about it, the only thing you can really do is holdout on upgrading until it's there. what else can you do?
