Downloading Chase data
I am unable to get my Chase bank data. I get a Java error "There was an error communicating with your financial institution. The details of this error are below". But there is no information below.

Dan, there is information below but you have to expand that box manually. I believe they are working on this bug so that the whole error message appears without having to do that.
Is this your first time getting Chase data or have you been able to successfully download it before?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, it's the first time I've downloaded the Chase
data. I'm still evaluating Moneydance. I think it looks good. I usually
like doing things manually rather than Quicken that wants to do it all for
you.
I just now entered the Inst ID(B1) and ORG (10898) and URL (
https://onlineofx.chase.com/chase.ofx) manually and got another Java error.
"Java.net.SocketException: Unexpected end of file from server". Maybe I
used the wrong Chase information.
I read online that there will be a new build?
Thanks again,
Dan

Dan,
I believe you are correct that there is a new build coming out very shortly, but the update may not address your issue.
If you are downloading an OFX into the program, the best way is to go to the financial institution's website and find the download link for your data. If Moneydance is open when you are doing it you will be presented with dialog boxes that require a response from you. The first time you download from any particular institution, you will need to tell Moneydance which account to attach the downloaded information to.
To direct connect from within the program as you were trying to do, you may need to set it up at your financial institution first, and you may be required to change your password.
By the way, the best reasons to use Moneydance, IMO, is 1) it is Java based so it is multi-platform, 2) it is not bloated with advertisements, 3) it never "sunsets" like Quicken, 4) their generous licensing policy, 5) lots of help available from the company and other users in this forum.
Welcome aboard!

Dan,
If you're setting up your account for direct connection, it's best to use the New Connection button instead of the Manual Setup if your bank is on the supported list (which Chase is). Banks in our database frequently connect as Quicken 2008 or 2009, which some banks require. If you use manual setup, Moneydance will connect as itself, which causes some banks to reject the connection.
If you've already set up a manual connection, you should disable it and recreate the connection by using the New Connection button and selecting Chase from the downloaded list of supported banks. Also, Chase does require that you activate your accounts for direct connect with them before you'll be able to connect in Moneydance. I believe you can do so from their website.
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance, and thanks for your interest Moneydance!

Jessica,
Thanks for writing to help. I have to tell you that I am getting very
frustrated with Moneydance. First it was downloading the accounts that
didn't work. Well OK I can do that manually as I had been doing it. Then I
read that someone was trying to reconcile their account. The response told
her about the Action button. Well I don't have an action button in 2010. I
can't find anywhere that enables Moneydance to reconcile my account at all.
I downloaded Moneydance 2008 and the Action Button is right there in plain
view along with a very different interface. When I tried to download my
account data from Chase with 2008 I got an error that said: "The error code
reported by the server was: 2000. USER NOT AUTHORIZED TO ACCESS THE
SYSTEM". But I had a new version of Quicken 2010 that downloaded the data
fine. I did not have to activate my account with Chase. It just worked
fine for Quicken. So I'd think it should also work just as easily for
Moneydance, right?
Jessica, what's going wrong?
Thanks again for your help.

Dan-
I only have a Chase credit card and I am able to download my transactions from Chase to Moneydance via direct download. So I can assure you that direct connect via the "Chase" FI definitely does work.
When I originally setup my connection using MS Money I had to activate my account to do so but it was a simple procedure via the web. I am not sure if the web site is different from a credit card but there is a Customer Center page. On that page there is a Tools section and under that is an "Activate Money, Quicken, etc." link. Click that and it is done. Either way if it works for Quicken then it is already activated and so should work for Moneydance.
The fact that you are getting a 2000 error means you are getting to a server that understands OFX requests. Problem is the 2000 error is the generic catch all error although I have to believe their server should have a log of the attempt since it did return an error.
In the list of FI's I see 2 with Chase in the name (well actually 3 but one is for investments so it is clearly not an option):
1) Chase
2) Chase Manhattan Bank
I am not sure what the difference is but if you search the web for Chase Manhattan you end up with the same web site as Chase.
I have not used Quicken so I don't know how to setup online connectivity but I am guessing that like MS Money and Moneydance there is a list of supported FI's. Does Quicken have the same 2 choices? Are you using the same one in Moneydance that you chose in Quicken?

First off- reconciling. in Moneydance 2010 this function is now found under the "Edit" menu in build 735, and has moved to the more intutive "Account" menu for build 738 (which is currently still in beta testing). It is likely that you have build 735. You can find out your version by going to the Help Menu and choosing the About Moneydance option.
Next- Most financial institutions will require you to enable your accounts for application-based online banking. I'm afraid it is usually more productive to lie and tell your bank that you are using Quicken. Moneydance uses exactly the same OFX server connection protocol as Quicken but you bank representative many not know this and mistakenly believe that they do not support Moneydance. Calling up your bank and stating precisely the following should get you started. "Please enable direct connect on my account such that I can connect to your servers directly with Quicken. Also give me the login credentials I need to connect Quicken to this service."
Application-based online banking often requires a different login/PIN than the ones that are used for ATM or web-based banking. When you enable your account for access from Moneydance or Quicken, your financial institution should let you know what customer ID/login and PIN to use.
Third- Quicken and Money support two methods of accessing your accounts: direct connect and web connect. With web connect, they basically connect to your bank's website and download and import OFX files. Direct connect actually connects to a server at your bank instead of their website and usually requires different login credentials than you would use to log into your banks website. Moneydance only supports automatic connections through direct connect and not web connect. What this means for you is that you may have been using web connect through Quicken to connect, which means your account may not yet be enabled for direct connections, and you will need to follow the steps described above.
