Different version of Java

Is it now possible to use the current version of JRE, which I already have installed for use with LibreOffice? I found several old items which stated that it should not be done but don't see any new items. I would like to only have one version of java (the latest version - now 10.0.2 +13), rather than two; one of which is obsolete.
I am using 2017.5 version (1639) on Win10. When I tried deleting the JRE directory (to try forcing it to use what is already resident elsewhere on my computer) under MD, I got a error box that said EXE4J_JAVA_HOME must be defined.
