Hi - I would like to transfer my Moneydance account data to my new computer. I downloaded a new upgraded version of Moneydance successfully, but cannot get it to access my data from my older version that I had exported to an external drive. I get the message that " There was an error importing the file 'Moneydance data': Unknown file type.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help.

It could help support or others to help you if you posted the version and build of Moneydance you are running on your old and new computer, see under HELP – ABOUT MONEYDANCE. e.g. 2017.8(1682).
Also you computers operating system on both your computers.
With this information it should be possible to post the correct process for moving your data.

    Thanks - here you go:

I have been using Moneydance 2015 on a laptop.

I have a Dell computer running Windows that I downloaded Moneydance 2017
    onto.

I want to transfer the data from the 2015 version on the laptop to the 2017
version on the Dell. So far nothing has worked.

On your existing computer click HELP - SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER. This will open a file explorer at the data set default location. Your data set is a folder containing other files and folders. It has the naming convention of yourdatasetname.moneydance. Copy you data set folder to same location on your new computer.
on your new computer open Moneydance. It should open in the welcome to Moneydance window with your data set listed on the right hand side. Double click to open. If Moneydance open in a data set click FILE - OPEN your data set should be listed.

    Hope this helps

OK - I am pretty sure I somehow have this so screwed up that it's almost
    hopeless.

    That did not work.

I copied the folder to my desktop on the new computer, as you suggested,
but when I opened Moneydance, I did not get the welcome window you spoke of
with the data set listed on the right. Sadly.

I think I somehow earlier accidentally imported a blank set of data with no
accounts listed. So I get the regular Moneydance screen with no accounts.

I tried opening the moneydance folder - no luck.

So I clicked on import - and went to the copied Moneydance document folder
    - had to keep opening folders until I got a long long list of files, all
with a .txn extension, all dating 2/2015 to 3/2016. Not helpful at all.
Do I try to import those? But they are not current.

Thanks for help anyone can offer.

Maybe I should uninstall Moneydance on the new computer, and start from
the beginning ? Would they let me upgrade again?

Reading your posts, it looks like you did not completely follow my instructions, hence your problems.

You state “I copied the folder to my desktop on the new computer”. My instructions were to “Copy your data set folder to the same location on your new computer”. The location found when you clicked on HELP – SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER on your old computer.

As you have already opened Moneydance on your new computer click HELP - SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER. This will open a file explorer at the data set default location on your new computer. Close Moneydance and copy your data set folder to this location. Restart Moneydance. Then back to my original instructions “If Moneydance open in a data set click FILE – OPEN, your data set should be listed.”

Don’t enter your data set folder to show a long long list of .tnx files. Don’t use Import. Don’t uninstall Moneydance, none of this will help. Just follow my original instructions carefully not missing out any steps.

    Hope this helps.
