Sorry to hear of the issue you've encountered when using Moneydance. Can you let me know the version and build number of Moneydance you are using? You can check this detail within Moneydance by navigating to Moneydance --> About Moneydance.
When you navigate within Moneydance to Tools --> Categories, this should generate a new window titled 'Edit Categories'. Selecting the 'New' option at the bottom should allow you to create a new category. Can you let me know at which point you are encountering problems?
