I last used Moneydance about 4 days ago. I'm running it on a Mac using OSx. I have just gone to open the MD application and am presented with the start up screen asking if I want to create a new file etc. There is no .md file to be found on my hard drive. I have no idea where it has gone. The data is synced to my iPad and iPhone. The only thing I can think is that there is some connection with using the iPad app which i set up a few days ago. Any thoughts?

Using the iPad app will not have been the cause of the disappearance of your .md data file. The sync mechanism with the iPad app writes toa different set of sync files.

Is it possible that you have logged into OSX with a different user account?

Have you used spotlight search to search for all files containing the characters .md?

Have you looked in your trash folder?

By default Moneydance is configured to create a set of backup .md data files. These are stored in the same folder that the primary .md file is in. Do you recall where you had your primary .md file saved?

I'm definitely logged in correctly as I only have one user account.

    Spotlight shows no md files.

It's not in the trash folder. There are some old QIF files showing as Moneydance, these are files that I have downloaded from my bank previously.

It is just as though I have only just loaded the application.

I don't recall the folder where the .md file lived. Is there not a default md folder?

When you first save the moneydance data file the default folder it will be saved in is the Documents folder.

Yes I know. There is nothing there. It's as if it never was there. No trace of an md file anywhere on the hard drive. I need to figure out what the Mac version of a system restore is.

    Hi Michael,

It's possible that your file system permissions are preventing you from being able to write files to certain places (depending upon the permissions). Are you able to save a .md file to the Documents folder (or whatever folder you'd prefer to use to store your Moneydance data files)?

Scott - I have no problem using the application or creating and saving a new .md file. As I say, it's as if I have just installed the app for the first time. There is no trace of the old file anywhere on the Mac. It's bizarre to say the least. Even if the kids had been in and deleted the files they would show in the trash folder.

Thanks anyway - it's a great app btw and the support is excellent, even if we can't fix it!

    Hi Michael,

I'm wondering if Moneydance isn't saving your settings due to the permissions of your home folder. Could you check the permissions using this knowledgebase article:
