Quotes plugin not fetching UK fund prices

I'm using the Quotes and Exchange Rates extension and have added several UK-based funds. I've added ticker symbols for those that are listed on Yahoo Finance UK, and set the extension to fetch Current Security Prices from there. I've set the Stock Exchange for each fund to London Exchange (Pence).

However, when I go to the extensions Advanced option and run a Test, then it doesn't fetch anything. Clicking the Test Result (which says x Current Quote: (!) I get an alert which says:

Ticker Symbol: null
History: User chose not to update
Current Quote: Connection refused

As an example, one of the funds is listed here: http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/q?s=GB0006833718.L&ql=1 I've tried using Ticker Symbols with and without the extra .L. I hoped it might be a temporary thing when I started using the extension a month ago, but haven't seen any improvement. Thanks.

Sorry this won't help solve the problem but might add weight to getting an answer. I'm using the trial version and want to buy but not if the share price updating doesn't work.

I have exactly the same problem as Phil G - same error message with a number of different funds, also using Yahoo Finance UK.

While Yahoo make mutual price information visible on their website they no-longer make the data downloadable. (This only affects UK mutual fund symbols) I am afraid that we do not have a solution to this.

Thanks for the reply - what a shame.  I think I might have to keep plodding on with my unsupported Quicken (not that downloads work on that either.)

    Regards, Richard

    lugs2009 and richard f,
It's a Yahoo Finance UK issue. Yahoo Finance UK is to blame Moneydance.

If you've began using Moneydance, then why not stay with it.

Moneydance has a wonderful Support Staff. The Support Staff is augmented by a huge, user based and knowledgable, world wide, support group.

    richard f,
Aside from the Yahoo Finance UK Issue, which is the fault of Yahoo Finance UK and not that of Moneydance, is there any other reason for not buying the License Key to Moneydance?

Hi James.  I'm not sure if you're a Moneydance employee or enthusiastic user but it seems odd to be talking about 'blame'.   I don't see it as anyone's fault but the fact remains that unfortunately it doesn't
do what I hoped it would and whose 'fault' it is doesn't change that.  It would have been helpful if the website had mentioned that the updater doesn't work for UK funds - perhaps it does say that and I missed it.

I haven't ruled out continuing with Moneydance as I like the rest of what I've seen but why would I spend money on something that doesn't do more than the Quicken program I have?  Alternatively the Banktree updater does work (using Bloomberg) and I think Banktree is cheaper than Moneydance, but I'm not so keen on some of the other features.

    Thanks for the input.

    Richard

    I'm not a Moneydance employee. I've been a Moneydance user since 2002.

    Why spend Moneydance?
Well, from what I understand about Quicken in the U.K., Moneydance is current and well supported by both it's user base and the Staff at Moneydance while Quicken is way out of date. I don't know if it still a supported product by Intuit, you can fill in as to whether it is still a supported product in the U.K.

The best action for Moneydance to take at this point would be to indicate somewhere in the software (and documentation) that mutual fund symbols cannot be updated in the UK. It doesn't matter who's fault it ultimately is *cough* Yahoo *cough*, but this would save anyone else wasting too much time trying to get it to work. Thanks.

Like richard f (Apr 30th), I am currently assessing Moneydance using the trial version. I have converted many years' transactions from Quicken very successfully and I am pleased with my initial use of Moneydance.

However I have two issues - one I am raising on a different conversation but the other concerns the updating of UK security prices, including shares & mutual funds or OEICs.

Ben Spencer says above that Moneydance do not have a solution to the fact that Yahoo information is no longer downloadable. If Yahoo cannot be persuaded to change their policy, there are surely other possible sources of the information.

Moneydance will probably have to pay but then I expect to have to pay Moneydance if I decide to switch from the trial version!

Is it too much to ask Moneydance to be pro-active on this issue for the benefit of their current & prospective UK customers.

I am in the some place with this issue.

I would buy money dance if the product automatically updates UK mutual funds.

Please also note that my 14y old MS Money still updates UK mutuals funds, so it might be worth switching to the same data source.

    Hi,
Just downloaded MoneyDance tonight and had hoped it would update UK fund prices, cash is ready but no fund updates is a bit of a deal breaker for me. Having said that, I'll try updating manually and if that is okay then this could finally be the replacement for MS Money.

    Hi Mickey,
Moneydance gleans it quotes data from Yahoo and Google. For some reason these entities stopped updating most UK fund prices almost a year ago.
    That's the bad news.
The good news is that there is a free extension that makes it easy to manually update price quotes.
Look to the Security Price Entry extension from Songline Software:

on-line quotes for UK funds are available from ftfunds.com, morningstar.co.uk, trustnet.com, citywire.co.uk, etc.

I have written add-ons for the Perl Finance::Quote module (as used by gnucash - open source, fully featured, no charge) which will use these sources to automatically update funds prices.

It shouldn't be difficult for the people at Moneydance to use these sources.
