I am having two problems: 1. Moneydance keeps crashing. I am running Mac OSX latest version., 2. When I restart moneydance it does not start with the last (most recent) check register. Every time I use it I need to start it from the last backup. Also, where does moneydance store the backups it creates?

What release of Java do you have installed? Which release of OSX are you using? You can get this information from within Moneydance by going to Help - Console Window. Choose "Copy to Clipboard" and paste the results in your reply to this message.

    Starting Moneydance 2011r2 (803)
    Settings Folder: /Users/jamesfalknor/.moneydance
OS: Mac OS X 10.5.8 ppc
    Java: 1.5.0_30 (Apple Inc.)
    handybank: initialized
FullScreenUtilities class not found: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.apple.eawt.FullScreenUtilities
    handybank: starting Dropbox sync mode.
handybank: Using Dropbox synchronization path: /Users/jamesfalknor/Dropbox/.moneydancesync/HandyBank/
    handybank: starting Dropbox sync monitor
FullScreenUtilities class not found: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.apple.eawt.FullScreenUtilities

It also sounds as though you haven't created your primary .md data file yet.
Have you ran File - Save As, yet. Also, are you saving you primary .md data after making changes to your account within Moneydance by using File - Save?

I saved my .md data file to a USB flash drive in a folder named Moneydance. Once I did that, I have been able to work with my .md data file from that. I always run File - Save after making changes in my accounts within Moneydance. I do not use the "Save On Every Quit" option under Preferences - General. See screenshot Picture 38. I saved mine with the name myaccount.md.

I encourage people to save their primary .md file off computer somewhere. Such as a USB flash drive, external Hard Drive, or Networked Hard Drive and access the file from that all the time. This is in the event that your primary hard drive on your computer should fail, you won't lose any of you Moneydance .md data files.

You can specify under Preferences - Backup as to where and how often to store your backup files. See screenshot Picture 39. I've encrypted my .md data file, so it is safe for me to save the backups to my Dropbox - Moneydance folder.

Thanks for the response. Fortunately, I back up every session using Save As in a separate folder. And I do have preferences set to back up every 5 minutes. But I don't know where it is backing up to.

    OK.
You definitely need to upgrade to Java 1.7 or just plain Java 7. Java 6 has a lot of problems with it. You can find Java 7 at: http://jdk7.java.net/macportpreview/ . You will need to uninstall Java 6 and Install Java 7.

As for where your backup files are located, I suggest that you follow Picture 39 above. Specify a folder for your Moneydance backup files. That way you'll always know where the backup files are being placed. I would suggest creating a folder named something like Moneydance Data Backups or something to that effect.

You only need to run File - Save As once, when you first started using Moneydance and setup your account/s for the first time within Moneydance. You need to run File - Save after making any changes to your account/s within Moneydance. By running "Save As" all the time, you are creating a new primary .md data file. There is no need to create a new primary .md data file every time that you make a change to your account/s in Moneydance. That is definitely part of the problem. You're running "Save As" instead of just "Save" all the time.

    So, to Sum up:
    1. Uninstall Java 6 and Install Java 7.
    2. Designate a specific folder for your Moneydance back up files.
    3. Stop running "Save As" and just run "Save" from now on after making changes to your account/s within Moneydance.
