can't enter foreign currency or exchange rate in transaction
Hi there,
Am trying to enter a foreign currency amount, but I can't edit either the foreign currency or exchange rate in the edit transaction screen. (Have read the FAQ and manual on this). Attached is a screenshot - default currency is THB. When I tried to enter the amount in AUD, the automatic conversion worked. Just can't edit the other two fields.
I am working on a Mac, OS X 10.7.2, Moneydance 2011r2.

I'm afraid that currently the iPad/iPhone app does not support foreign currency transfers.

Hi there,
I think this is the answer to my other question, which I posted in the iPad/iPhone/mobile apps forum (thank you!). I figured that this might be the case, but just wanted to check.
But actually the above question refers to the software I have installed on my MacBook - can you take a look at the screenshot I sent, and let me know if that is normal? It doesn't match the screenshot displayed in the FAQ about entering foreign currency amounts on both sides of a transaction, where both the rate and foreign currency fields are editable.
thanks!

What is the currency of the account called "SM BBL Savings"? The fields rate and foreign amount are only enabled when the currency of the destination account (the one specified in the category) is different from the currency of the account the transaction is being entered in.

Hi - default account currency is THB, transaction was entered in AUD. The conversion worked fine, no problems there.
My question is how to enter the exact foreign currency amount and the conversion rate if I don't want it done automatically - it doesn't work on my computer as specified in the FAQ adn manual.

Looking at your screenshot I am fairly certain that the account you are entering the transaction is is in THB and the account "SM BBL Savings" is also in THB. You can check the currency of an account by going into the register for that account and then selecting Account->Edit Account...

Sorry, I think I see why we're going around in circles.
I was looking for a way to enter exact amounts on both sides of a foreign currency TRANSACTION (for example, a credit card purchase). I now see that the FAQ is for exact amounts on both side of a foreign currency TRANSFER. I have tried this out, and it works fine.
I assume there is no way to enter exact amounts on both sides of a foreign currency transfer?

Okay, upon reading the manual again, it sounds like this function should work for a normal transaction as well:
from p 41 of the manual:
•To set the exact amount of the “Other Side” of a multi-currency transaction, use the “Foreign Amount” Field. This is especially useful for currency exchanges and credit card transactions.
However, I can't access the foreign amount field when I edit a normal transaction. So far, that field has only become editable for me when I create a transfer from an account of one currency (THB) to an account of another currency (AUD).
Can I use this function with normal transactions as well, and if so, how? If not, can you make a note to correct the manual?
Thanks!

Hi again,
Okay, on reading the manual again, it sounds like it should be possible to enter an amount in the "foreign amount" field in a normal transaction as well, such as a credit card purchase:
from p. 41:
•To set the exact amount of the “Other Side” of a multi-currency transaction, use the “Foreign Amount” Field. This is especially useful for currency exchanges and credit card transactions.
However, when I enter a normal transaction, the "foreign amount" field is not editable. So far in my testing, the "foreign amount" field has only become editable in the case of a transfer from an account in one currency to an account in another.
So..
- can I in fact record the foreign amount in a normal transaction, and if so, how? - if not, can Moneydance correct this information in the manual?
Thanks!

You say "So far in my testing, the "foreign amount" field has only become editable in the case of a transfer from an account in one currency to an account in another." That is correct. The rate and foreign amount fields are only enabled when the other side is in a different currency.
I'm a little confused by what you are wanting here. If the currency is the same on both sides of a transaction (What you are referring to as normal transaction) then the amounts are by definition going to be exactly the same on both sides of that transaction. There is no need to set the exact amount on the other side as it will be identical to the amount on this side.

Sorry for not being clear - the specific case I'm thinking of is if I use my THB credit card to make a purchase in another currency (for example if I am using it while travelling, or to make an online purchase in another currency).
So in the example of my screenshot attached earlier, I entered 20 AUD in the transaction field, and it automatically converted the amount into THB. I was looking for a way to also record the price in the original currency (20 AUD), and was wondering if I could use the foreign amount field to do so.

I am afraid what you are asking for is not possible unless you want to record the other amount in a memo on the transaction.
