VAT/GST checkbox on existing transaction
Hi,
I imported my QIF file from Quicken and it imported all my
transactions ok, but I'm working on the VAT/GST now, so in the
settings feature, I added a sales tax number to one of my
categories. Then I chose the existing transaction I wanted to apply
VAT/GST to and checked the box. Nothing happened. Isn't it supposed
to split the line and do the calculation on the total, indicating
the amount that is tax?
Also, when setting up VAT/GST in the settings, the far right column asks you to assign an account. That seems redundant to me. Wouldn't you just want to have the same account that you're putting the tax into? Please explain.

Can you clarify if you are interested in recording VAT/GST on purchases you are making or are you running a small business and want to withhold VAT/GST for later payment to the government?
While you may only want to use a single account/category to store record the VAT there are circumstances when multiple categories are desirable.
If you have specified under Tools->VAT/GST settings... the tax rate for a particular category and the category that tax should be recorded under then you can edit an existing transaction, check the apply vat box, and when the transaction is recorded the amount will be split. Can you show a screenshot of how you have set your VAT/GST settings?

Hi Ben,
Attached are a couple screenshots that will hopefully clarify my problem. First of all, I'm applying VAT/GST to purchases I have made. I'm still very confused about the process. What if I go out to a restaurant in one city with sales tax of 8.1% and then purchase clothes at a store in another city with sales tax of 7.72%. How do I track this? I live on the edge of several cities and counties in an urban area and am constantly purchasing in different districts.
In the screenshot that has the transaction entry, this screenshot was taken AFTER I pressed "return" on my keyboard (the only way I know to finish off a transaction and hear the cash register sound effect). As you can see, nothing happened, no split--it just stayed exactly the same.
Thanks,

If you want to use the same category with more than one tax rate you will need to create two categories and under the VAT/GST settings specify the different rates for the different categories. I am afraid there is no other way to do it.
In the second screenshot, the one with the transaction the transaction has not yet been saved. I can tell this because the transaction is still in edit mode. Pressing return should save the transaction. It is at the point the transaction is saved that the VAT is applied. Can you try pressing enter again.

Hi Ben,
I'm starting up this discussion again after a long hiatus. I'm still having the same problem as stated in my previous post. It must be a bug. I am using the most current version of Moneydance and the most current version of Java on OSX Lion. I've tried now 4 times to enter a transaction, then checked the "apply VAT" box and pressed return. The 1st 3 times, Moneydance froze and I had to force quit. I installed the latest version of Java, restarted my computer and tried a 4th time. The 4th time, when I hit return, nothing happened, exactly as I have showed you in my second screenshot. You say that "pressing return should save the transaction", but it won't get me out of edit mode. It does nothing. At least it's not freezing, but it's not responding in any case. Is there an alternate way besides pressing return to finish a transaction? By the way, I've sent reports to Apple following these crashes.
Thanks,
JT

Also, I should add that I just tried to quit Moneydance and it wouldn't even let me quit. My CPU usage is over the top and I have no other programs open. I realize this may be an Apple issue, but I'm basically working with a good-as-new computer, as it has recently had most of its parts replaced. Hope this gives you more information.
Thanks,
JT

Hi JT,
Look to the following Knowledge Base article to possibly resolve the 'freezing' issue.

Unfortunately, that didn't work. I've tried again a number of times. The first time, I turned off the beep. Then I tried to check the VAT box in an already created transaction. Thinking that might be the problem, I created a new transaction, making sure to have the VAT box checked from the start. In each case, after pressing Return/Enter wouldn't accept the transaction and the program froze up. Every time, I had to force quit the program. I have already invested hours and hours of time into this. I'm hoping I don't have to abandon the VAT/GST function.
Please tell me how I can officially report this as a bug and get it fixed.
Thanks,
JT

Can you select Help->Console Window and then reproduce the problem. Copy and paste any output from the console window to this discussion.

Hi Ben,
I wasn't able to reproduce this:
"Moneydance freezes when I enter a transaction, then check the VAT/GST box and then press <enter> "
However, I WAS able to reproduce this:
"When I entered a transaction, checked the VAT/GST box and pressed <enter>, the transaction was accepted, but no tax adjustment was made."
Here is the console output information:

Can you confirm that for the catefory you selected on the transaction you have a tax setting set up for that category under Tools->VAT/GST Settings... Both a percentage and an category for the tax to be categorised as. See an example in the attached screenshot.
