Online Bill Payment Error / PNC Bank
I am able to download transactions from my bank with no problem. Since I began using Moneydance a couple of months ago, I have been able to make online bill payments but only after posting the transaction multiple times. For the past week, I have not been able to post any online bill payments with Moneydance. I receive the following errors:
There was an error communicating with your financial
institution. The details of this error are below.
I'm sorry, an error occurred. The details of this error are
below.
Error Description: java.lang.Exception: Server did not acknowledge

Any help appreciated

Hi Bob (McDonald),
It should just work, but it wouldn't hurt to try resetting your connection in case my assumption about that is wrong. To do so, you can follow these steps:
1) Select your bank account in Moneydance
2) Select the Online->Setup Online Banking button/menu
3) Click the "Disable" button. If you don't see a disable button, continue to step 5.
4) Select the Online->Setup Online Banking button/menu (again)
5) Click the "New Connection" button and select your bank and hit OK
6) Continue with the setup process, entering your username/password
7) Repeat steps 1-6 for any additional accounts
Make sure you pick new connection, even though your bank is still one of the connection choices after you disable it. This will make sure that Moneydance is refreshing the connection.
I don't think logs will be useful right now, unless you starting getting a different error message than the "payment not acknowledged" one. If we need them, I'll repost the instructions on how to create them.
Bob (Shapiro),
When a payment is acknowledged, Moneydance will put a transaction in your register for that payment, as well as marking it as "Will Process" in the bill pay window. Right now, those are the only indicators in Moneydance of a successful payment. You should be able to contact PNC to verify the payment, probably through their website and possibly also by phone.

thanks Jessica
I now see that the transaction is in my register and we'll see if it gets
paid
very nice
so if you would please, two additional questions
1) do you think I should stop using the beta and wait until you send out an
update or is it reasonable to continue using the beta if it is working for
me?
2) can I set up recurring monthly payments in MD like I have done so in
quicken?

Hi Bob,
I think it's probably fine to keep running the beta build, as long as you continue to back up your file. Really, you should back up your file anyway, but running a beta build makes that more important. You can find information about automatic backups in Chapter 15 of our User's Guide. If you use automatic backups, but sure to check them occasionally to make sure they are actually being created and aren't corrupted.
It is not yet possible to initiate online bill payments through Moneydance, but you can set up a monthly reminder for the transaction. You can find out more information about reminders in Chapter 7 of the guide.

Hi All,
So, there's a few bugs in the current daily build that, while they won't eat your data, are not so pleasant visually. Attached is a more pleasant build that you can use for testing this bug. Thanks again for your help!

Hi again,
So, we found a few more problems with the current build, so unfortunately, it's no longer available for testing. I'll try to have a more stable build available shortly. Sorry for the troubles.

Jessica,
Just as an update for me, I was able to verify that I can use Quicken to
make online payments for this account, but MD still doesn't work. However, I
did see an error message I've never seen before which was something along
the lines of "server doesn't support making two payments with the same date
and amount to the same payee". I had tried to pay the same amount as via
Quicken, so maybe that one did actually get through and then failed for an
unrelated reason. But nothing else succeeded and I got lots of the old
error.
I will try the new build when available. Thanks for pursuing this!

Jessica,
No payment, but progress of a sort, a new error message:
A communication or parsing error occurred. This could be the result of a
network problem, a proxy error, or misconfigured server.
Error Description: java.io.IOException: HTTP Error:400 Bad Request
I was able to download financial information okay with this build. I kept a
log, let me know if you would like to see it, to whom I should send it, and
remind what I should redact. The error occurs right after the payment
information is submitted (right after </OFX>).
I am using Ubuntu linux 10.04, I don't know if this matters. If it does,
anything I should check?
Thanks!

Hi Bob,
If you could send me your logs, that would be great. You can email them to me at [email blocked]. You'll just need to redact any account numbers and userids in the file.

Hi Jessica. No error message this time! The payment shows up in my
register coded yellow but there was no "success" message. *However*:
when I checked for new transactions (ctrl-D) after making the payment,
the java error message showed up again. But then I checked for new
transactions again and the error didn't appear. So something remains flaky.

Hi Bob,
Sounds like progress! I looks like the payment did indeed go through, though I'm not sure why that error message showed up again. Can you verify that PNC received the payment, just so we can be sure it really do go through? You should be able to see it on their website, I believe, or perhaps you will need to call them.

Jessica,
I've been checking and so far the payment has not shown up online. Things
are busy today. I will call them Monday if it's still not showing up (and if
no check shows up).
I will let you know.

My online payment instructions entered in Moneydance never show up on the banks website until after the transaction is processed. After an online payment instruction is created in Moneydance, I can go to Moneydance 'Account; Online; Online Bill Payment' and look at the 'Outbox' tab. The 'Outbox' tab will tell me which payments have been 'Processed' and which ones 'Will Be Processed'. Now if I can just figure out how to use Moneydance to make a direct transfer of money from one account to another.

Steven,
I had a LONG talk with the PNC folks a while ago. The Online bill pay and the Quicken bill pay system are totally separate. If you enter a bill in the web system, it in no way interacts with the Quicken system, and visa versa. I was entering bills into MD (telling them it was quicken) and never saw them on the web interface. I called and talked to tier 3 support. The woman was pretty open and indicated that she was seeing the bills entered and explained that I would not see them in the web interface. That may be what you are encountering. Call PNC support and ask for Quicken support . Then you'll have to ask for their backend support folks to check and see if the bills are actually entered in the system. Also, ask them to put in the request to to have the quicken side tied to the web interface so you can see the bills in both. If they get enough requests for that, they might add it.
Good luck.

Just wanted to provide an update here. I have spoken to PNC quicken support
twice and they tell me that there have been no payments made from my account
via quicken. However, I'm mindful of jsfrederick's warning about the
disconnect between systems and the difficulty of getting an answer about
this.
I have also sent several more test checks today using the last test build
and was seemingly able to do so without any error messages, but again I
don't know if the checks really were entered into processing.
I will let everyone know once I learn whether the latest build is working.
Frustrating, this is.

Robert, if you select the Online->Online Bill Payment menu in Moneydance you can view a list of the current payees and payments for your account. This list is reliable... if there are no error messages and a payment does not appear in the list, then the payment has not or will not be processed. If a payment does appear in that window (and is not labeled "Canceled" or something similar) then the payment has been or will be processed.
169 Posted by rmcd1024 on 24 Nov, 2010 03:28 AM
Okay, thanks. The list shows some transactions as "processed", two as "will
process", and no errors. I'll let you know what happens. If it turns out
that PNC was wrong about whether transactions were uploaded, that will give
me an excuse to call and harrass them about this. They really should have
this all working together.

Okay, here is the status. I have six checks (all to myself) showing as
"Processed", with dates ranging from 11/17 to 11/30. I received two
checks yesterday and I'm embarrassed to say that I'm not sure when these
were sent (note to self: when testing, vary the amounts!).
HOWEVER: the obvious good news is that Moneydance did successfully
process at least two checks. This is a first for me and obvious
progress. So thanks for that
I do think the process is more confusing than it needs to be and I have
a suggestion for the docs. When the status is "will process", what does
that mean? Does it mean that MD has sent the request to the bank and I
am waiting for the bank to process it? Or does it mean that MD has yet
to send the request? The manual doesn't clarify this. I had entered some
transactions while online last week, and yesterday they showed up as
"Processed" with a date of 11/30. Between last week and yesterday, were
these transactions sitting in MD waiting to be processed or sitting at
PNC waiting to be processed?
Obviously PNC deserves a lot of blame for not integrating its quicken
and web banking, but the Moneydance online bill payment dialog could be
clearer.

Updates?
Is this beta worth installing for a general user?
Support Staff 172 Posted by Jessica Little on 04 Dec, 2010 06:36 PM
Hi Karl,
If you don't mind things being a little wonky in the beta and you're doing regular backups, it's ok to use. However, we hope to have a new release out in the next few weeks, so you may just want to wait for that.

i'm not exactly sure how it could have happened, but somehow an online bill pay check from PNC Bank written by someone that I dont know, cleared through my checking account at Bank of America. BOA has credited my account back with the funds that were erroneously debited, but I'm stunned that someone else's check could even get into my checking account. The common denominator appears to be that we both have the same dentist who appears to have deposited the physical checks.

Is there an ETA on this fix yet?
From this thread alone the problem appears to be nearly a year and a half old! I've been evaluating MD and need to decide soon whether to buy it or look at something else.
Is a MD 2011 version in the pipeline? What will the upgrade policy be?
Support Staff 177 Posted by Jessica Little on 19 Feb, 2011 07:39 PM
Hi All,
We hope to have a final fix for this available in the coming week. I'll post here when it's up.
A preview of MD 2011 should also be available in the coming week. We haven't finalized the upgrade policy yet. It will certainly be a free upgrade for anyone who purchased MD 2010 though. I'll let you know for sure when I have more details.

Hi All,
So, we're almost ready to release a preview of Moneydance 2011 that we believe fixes this bug. It's days away from release. However, we would love it if some of you could test out the preview to see if this bug is really fixed this time, so that we can make sure it's fixed for the stable 2011 release. It would be great if interested parties could download our daily build, install it, and try paying a few bills. You can download the installers from our website at http://moneydance.com/tmp/daily/installers/777/installers/
Thanks for helping us finally squash this bug! Hopefully, once MD 2011 is out, this will be fixed once and for all.

Thanks!!! Worked for me at SunTrust, three for three!!!!
Like the new Linux deb package too!
Now if you would get that pop-up calendar to work on the payment window.....
Thanks again, that was a real pain.

Did three additional on-line payments worked first time, every time! Great!!!!
Now the bad news, you probably already know this, there are a few new problems with this release (Linux deb):
May be more problems, but that's all the further I wanted to test.
Old problems that persist:
Thanks, keep up the good work!

Thanks for the update. I believe we've already fixed the first two new bugs you mentioned, but I'd like to work with you to make sure we get stuff like that working properly. I don't want to clog up this thread, however. Could you please start a new thread for these?
Thanks for your testing!
