MD Ubuntu package should depend on ia32-libs-multiarch for Oneiric (11.10)
Hello,
I had a problem today running Moneydance and I wanted to share the solution, and to suggest that the Ubuntu package be updated. I updated my Ubuntu installation from 11.04 to 11.10 last week, and discovered that MD didn't work after the upgrade. I would get strange errors like "bash: bin/unpack200: No such file or directory" even though the file existed.
This is related to 32-bit library support. In Ubuntu Oneiric, the support for 32-bit libraries on 64-bit systems has changed. The quick fix is to install the ia32-libs-multiarch package, which I think just depends on a large collection of 32-bit libraries; perhaps a better solution would be to get the MD package to depend on the exact 32-bit libraries it needs. But installing ia32-libs-multiarch allows MD to work.

Hello,
Thank you for pointing this out to us. I've created a suggestion ticket for this issue, so our developers can take a look at this.
In the meantime, a workaround for 64-bit users that should work would be to use the Moneydance .deb file that does not come with Java. Moneydance will then be run with whatever type of Java you have installed on your system. Presumably 64-bit users will have a form of Java installed that works with those systems, and Moneydance should run fine using that. The .deb file without Java can be found at http://moneydance.com/download/2011/installers/moneydance_no_java.deb
Thank you for your continued interest in Moneydance,

Using the no_java deb solved another problem that I had after upgrading to oneiric... Moneydance would hang every time I tried to run it. strace showed that it was stopping waiting on some futex. Dunno.
But the 64-bit JVM provided by Oneiric works fine.

Ah, I didn't know about the "no java" package. It works great! Thanks for the suggestion.

32 bit system ubuntu 11.10 Unity
Java 7 installed
What download of Moneydance is necessary to work with Java 7?
Problem, Moneydance was working but won't start up anymore; clicking on Moneydance means Moneydance disappears. Moneydance has been deleted. Can Java 6 be installed at the same time that Java 7 is installed? Java 6 has been removed and all add-ons for Java 6.

Tom,
Moneydance should work with Java 7. If the program has been deleted, but you still have Java installed, I would recommend downloading the no Java version of the .deb installer I linked to above (http://moneydance.com/download/2011/installers/moneydance_no_java.deb).

What is happening is MD was once working on this notebook but is no longer working. Another problem is that Ubuntu Software won't fully load, blank window. This is a new problem. I may have to use a MD download using .tar.

Tom,
Sounds more like an Ubuntu issue rather than a Moneydance issue, especially if Ubuntu Software won't fully load. You might try moving your main Moneydance ( .md ) file to something like a thumbdrive or some external drive and then reinstall Ubuntu from scratch.
You can then just keep the main Moneydance .md file on that thumdrive or external drive.
I keep my main Moneydance .md file on a thumbdrive in a folder named Moneydance. Everytime I use Moneydance and click save, it saves it to the .md file on the thumbdrive. Preserves all my account information in case my computer or harddrive takes a turn for the worse.
Just be sure that you have the License number handy for Moneydance. You'll need it when reinstalling Moneydance.

James, you are probably right about Ubuntu being the problem. I get concerned when MD doesn't work because of Ubuntu problems. Given that MD is propriety software, and we purchased it to replace our Quicken software, to work with Linux distributions, it should be important to MD to realize that its customers are important. A solution should sought after by MD to Ubuntu's problematic 11.10; a discussion should be opened. Ultimately, it is MD that should take the lead because it is their product that is at risk without a solution. Ubuntu has been reinstalled now at least three times and their still is some problem, with MD freezing up. Again, I suspect that you are correct in your estimating Ubuntu being the problem. I don't see Ubuntu addressing our problems with MD given that it is not supported by Ubuntu. If our problem goes unsolved we must seek another product to replace MD. This is not a problem with MD until it nolonger sells MD to those that would be new customers. We,ve purchased MD for a reason, a personal finance app that works for us using Ubuntu.

Hi Tom,
I am wondering if you can elaborate some on the problem you are encountering? Is there any error message that comes up when you try and open Moneydance? Could you try running it from the command line and see if it returns an error. Please tell me any important details that come up around your issue to help us troubleshoot it.
Sincerely,

Just wanted to let you know I found a resolution to the Moneydance problem.
i used the Moneydance without Java. It would load and I was able to enter
a transaction and it would freeze up. I did some research and learned that
the cash register sound (cha-ching) when completing a transaction causes
the freeze. I disabled the sound in the Moneydance program and it works
great now.
