Adding "split" to a previously reconciled transaction
I've been unable to add a "split" to the category section of
transaction that I've previously entered and reconciled.
Specifically, I purchased some appliances for my house that I added
to the basis of the property in the original transaction.
Subsequent to this, I received a rebate on some of the appliances.
Clearly I need to reduce the basis of the appliances by the amount
of the rebate. The I did this in the past, with Quicken, was to add
a "split" line to the original transaction, reduce the original
category by the amount of the rebate, then record the transactions
and categorize the rebate accordingly. From what I can see,
Moneydance will not permit me to add a split to an existing
transaction. This is very frustrating.
Can you help?

To add a split to an exiting transaction double click the transaction to put in edit mode. Then press ctrl-L (or click the split button at the top of the category selector) to bring up the split window. Click the plus (+) button at the bottom of the split window.
Please not that you cannot enter splits in the investment register. If an investment account is involved you would enter the split in the bank account.

Thanks ben but this doesn't work either. I don't get a response from either Control, Option, or Command-L. Moreover, when I double click the transaction to activate the edit dvfvmode there isn't a split caption at the top of the category selector. As I mentioned, I'm using a Mac.
Any other ideas?

Scott,
Could you please let me know what OS, version of Java, and version of Moneydance you are running? This will assist us in troubleshooting the problem. It would also be helpful for us to know what type of account register you are trying to initiate the split from (bank, asset, loan, etc).
Thanks for your help in diagnosing this issue,

Hi Angie,
I'm running OS X v 10.6.4, Moneydance 2010r3 (751), and Java 1.6.0_20.
Thanks.
Also, how can I change the date that I'm viewing my portfolio? For example, I usually receive Fidelity statement on the 3rd of the month. When I boot up Moneydance on the 3rd to reconcile it includes transactions that have transpired from the 1st to the 3rd. How can I change the view to only see transactions through the end of the previous month?

Scott,
That is odd that you're not seeing the split button. Would you be willing to send us a screenshot of the category list, seeing it might help us troubleshoot what is going on.
In order to view your portfolio as of a certain date; in the sidebar go to the portfolio report and use the edit button to select the date you want to view it at.
Sincerely,

Hi. I am having this same problem in windows XP pro. When I try to create a split by selecting the split option in the pull-down list Moneydance freezes on me. I can't even close it without using Windows Task Manager to shut it down.
As for the software versions, they are: Windows XP Pro SP3, Moneydance 2010r3 (751), Java Console 1.6.0_13 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)
Please help!
