Cannot launch MoneyDance in Mac OSx 10.5.6
I have used MoneyDance for years in Windows but at the moment I am considering moving over to Mac OSx..
For the time being and to try out Mac I am currently Dual Booting Windows 7 and Mac. (not perfect but it works)..
I have been trying to find alternative Personal Finance Software specific to Mac but since I already have a licence for MoneyDance in Windows I thought it better if I tried the Mac version of MoneyDance. (If I'm eventually allowed to move my licence over to Mac ??)
The Mac version downloads OK and appears to "install" OK but when I try to launch MoneyDance for the first time in Mac I get the following error message:-
CANNOT LAUNCH JAVA APPLICATION
Uncaught Exception in Main Method :-
"java.lang.ExceptionInitializerError"
This is obviously a Java problem but it appears to be "installed" correctly and is up to date in Mac.
Anyone have any ideas how to get around this problem, it's got to be simple but I'm afraid my Mac knowledge is less than adequate.
I use "quotes " around installed as I'm not sure if files are installed or just copied in Mac because everything seems to be "drag and Drop" or just Deleted?????
Cheers,
Ron.

It definitely seems as if you java installation is broken.
If you go to Applications->Utilities you could be able to open a terminal. At the terminal enter the command:
java -version
Please post the output here.

Hi Ron
Java 1.5 is a minimum requirement to run MD2010.
Java 1.5 is definably available for OS X 10.5. It might be that you already have 1.5 installed as well as 1.4. If this is the case you can tell your system to use 1.5 by opening the Java Preferences application (in /Applications/Utilities) and drag the "Java 1.5" (or Java 5) item above the Java 1.4 (or Java 4) item in the list of java versions for applications.

Hi Ben, thanks for the help.....
I changed the settings as you advised but still the same error message when trying to launch ("install") MoneyDance. (latest version download).
My settings were :-
Java Applelet Versions
J2SE 1.4.2 32Bit
J2SE 5.0 32Bit
Java Applications Versions
J2SE 1.4.2 32Bit
J2SE 5.0 32Bit
I've tried dragging and dropping v5.0 to the top (that's where it is now) on both settings and also individually one settting at a time but neither seem to work for me.
I've also tried re-starting my Computer between changes but that's no good either....
Regards,
Ron..

Hi Ron,
If I could have you clarify a few things regarding installing, did you run the installer program provided with MD and everything went well? And are you using the latest version of MD (did you recently download it from our website?) Would you be willing to send me a screenshot of your java settings just so I can double check and make sure nothing looks peculiar?
Hopefully things are almost fixed and its just hanging up on a little thing.
Thanks,
Jon Hoover, Moneydance Support

Hi Jon,
I thought Ben had deserted me !!!
To confirm :-
I downloaded the latest edition of MD for Mac from your Web-Site.
I double clicked on the downloaded MD icon in the Safari Download list..
That's as far as I get, the next thing to happen is mini error screen appears on my desktop (see my original contact with Ben on the 28th Aug for the exact wording of the error message)..
Current Java screenshot attached...
Kind Regards,
Ron.

Hi Jon,
Thanks for the offers of help but it's all just too much hassle to get MoneyDance up and running on OSx.......
Beats me why MD is the only program I've had problems with on install, every other piece of software loads up just fine, no sweat.....
I'll probably continue to use MD under Win 7 where it works just fine.......
Best Regards,
Ron..

I'm using OS X 10.5.8.
I'm using java version "1.5.0_24".
Software Update manager updated Java from 1.4 to 1.5 quite some time ago.
java version "1.5.0_24" is the latest release of Java for OS X.
11 Posted by jbnyt on 08 Sep, 2010 06:27 PM
I'm on OS X 10.5.8 and I have:
Java Version: 1.6.0_20
Java Vendor: Apple Inc.
This was an automatic update from Apple.

Java Versions are different depending on whether OS X is the 32bit version or 64bit version.
Java Version 1.5.0_24 = 32bit PPC or Intel version. This release is only for Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later versions of Mac OS X v10.5.
Java Version: 1.6.0_20 = 64bit Intel version

Ron,
Update OS X to 10.5.8.
Then update Java to 1.5.0_24

Ron,
The software updater on your mac will automatically update your java.
Just go to system preferences > software updater.

Having the same issue.
When I do java-versioin in the terminal window I get "command not found". I am the only user of this Mac so I should have full admin rights.
I just verified that I have the latest updates and the OS is 10.71.1
I have attached a screen capture of the full error.

Hi Ken,
The command is 'java -version' did you have the space between java and the hyphen when you typed it? Let me know if that works and what it says.
Thanks,

It might be that the Moneydance app did not download correctly. Could you delete the app on your computer and download it again.
Also did you have any moneydance extensions installed?

Well... Still having the same problem.
I had a number of problems with my Mac after upgrading to Lion so I had hoped that was causing the problems with MoneyDance. I have wiped my disk and done a new clean install and I am still seeing the very same error message that I sent previously.
Here is what Java shows
java version "1.6.0_26"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03-383-11A511)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02-383, mixed mode)

Hi Ken,
Just to double check can you confirm that you are running either Moneydance 2010 or 2011. (i.e. you didn't somehow try and run 2008)?
Sincerely,

I should have told you that I just downloaded a fresh copy from your website... in fact I have downloaded it several times...
The way I am installing is to click on the ZIP file and then click on the uncompacted moneydance file. As soon as I do that it gives me the error.
Support Staff 22 Posted by Jon Hoover on 26 Aug, 2011 02:20 AM
Ken,
Does the uncompacted file have a number next to it like -2 or -3? Did you happen to have any older versions of Moneydance on your computer?
Sincerely,
Jon Hoover, Moneydance Support
23 Posted by Ken Brown on 26 Aug, 2011 03:44 AM
Yes, I did have three files as you described but that was from downloading multipule times over the last few days. Prior to loading Lion my download directory was empty.
I just downloaded again and still the same... sending a screen shot of the files in download after I extracted the zip file.
Support Staff 24 Posted by Jon Hoover on 26 Aug, 2011 02:46 PM
Hi Ken,
Okay so delete all your prior downloads (just so we don't confuse it with a new one) and download from here: http://moneydance.com/download/2011-791/MacOS_X/Moneydance.zip
Let us know if this works.
Sincerely,
Jon Hoover, Moneydance Support

Ok... like before I deleted the entire contents of the download directly. I followed your link and downloaded the file. Clicked on the ZIP file. Then clicked on the MoneyDance Icon... same error...
Again, I am attaching the files in my download directory.
Sorry.. but I have downloaded the same exact file about 10 times now and nothing changes. I am really really desperate now.. I have not been able to get into your application for a week now. I am very concerned this is not going to work out and all of my data is in a proprietary file that I can not get into.
Ken

Hi Ken,
Could you please try Moving the Moneydance.app file into your Applications folder and running it?
If that doesn't work, could you try installing this slightly updated version of Moneydance: http://moneydance.com/tmp/daily/installers/792/MacOS_X/Moneydance.zip

Thanks Jessica... but, wish I had good news.
Moved the app file to the applications directory and launched from there... same error
Deleted app from applications directory and deleted original zip file from download directory
Downloaded new version and unzipped.
Moved new app to applications directory and launched from there... same error.

Did you download and install Java 6.0 from Apple after you wiped your disk clean and did a fresh install of Lion?
29 Posted by ken.brown on 27 Aug, 2011 05:38 PM
Please look at the previous messages... I sent the Java version earlier...
Here is what Java shows
