Can't find moneydance program after using it for over one month.
After using moneydance for over a month one day i went to use it and its gone from my computer. The screen says "windows can't open this file" "To open file windows needs to know what program you want to use to open it." I can no longer find the program. Do I use my same code and download it again. And if I do this will I lose the 4 months of information I had in moneydance. I did backup so will i be able to use my backup after i have restored moneydance. HELP!

Hi jmeyer,
It's possible that you're trying to open a backup file which would have the date appended to the original Moneydance data files' .md extention. This would be an unrecogizable extention to Windows and would give you the 'Windows can't open this file" message.
Try doing a 'Search' for *.md the star * is a wildcard so your search results should yeild any file with a .md extention.

Have you tried starting the program from the start menu rather than double clicking on a data file? i.e. select Start->All Programs->Moneydance.

Hi Kevin. I tried what you suggested and it brought up all the backup files. Not the original. They files all looked the same except for the dates were the date i backed up. ei: MD-2010-05-17
Hi Ben, I tried what you said and it brought up the program "My Finances-E:\moneydance" and a blank page. Nothing on it.
It is like the original program is just gone? What do I do now?

It sounds like you have inadvertently deleted you original .md data file. This is why Moneydance starts up as if it has no file. Moneydance remembers the location of the data file and tries to open it when you launch the program. Check your trash folder and see if it is still there.
Failing that you can open your most recent backup file by renaming it such that it ends with ".md" without the quotes.

I am thinking you are right, although I havn't emptied my trash forever and
its not there. I just don't think I would have done that but whatever. I
just want it back. So I tried putting .md after my last backup and it still
wouldn't open it. Do I need to download the program again? Janet

It should not be necessary to download the program again.
What exactly happened when you tried to open the backup file with the modified name?
What is the exact name of the now modified backup file?
How did you try and open the backup file? By double clicking on the data file or by running the program and telling it to open an existing file?
Did you get an error message? If so please tell me exactly what it said.

Hi Ben, I put .md behing my last moneydance backup and the new name is
moneydance.md now. It goes to a blank page. I pulled the backup from my
drive E and external harddrive i backup to. I doubled clicked on the file
to change the name. It won't let me run the file. It says nothing now when
I try opening it. Just a blank white page.

Hi Garath
When you downloaded the Moneydance program where did you put it on your computer? You should have put it in your applications folder. However you may find that it is still in your downloads folder.
If you don't know where your data file is use spotlight search to look for all files ending with .md

Hi Ben
The Moneydance program is in applications but when I go to open existing files it saysError: java.io.FileNotFoundException: /Applications/Moneydance.app (No such file or directory)

What exactly do you mean by "when I go to open existing files"? Are you running the moneydance program by double clicking on the program in the applications folder and immediately getting that error message?
Or are you double clicking on a .md data file and getting that error message?

Ben,
I am very disappointed that I switched from Quicken to Moneydance. I liked moneydance when it worked although I came across a couple of problems. The major problem is that it didn't work for long, only two months.
So the only way to fix the problem with moneydance support is to post or text/email back and forth. This is very time consuming and is very unclear and hard to do.
After numerous corrrespondence back and forth support still couldn't find the problem. I finally took matters into my own hands, because I didn't want to wait months going back and forth.
I hired a computer person and he remotely got into my computer (with me watching at all times) and new what the problem was in a matter of minutes. At a $70.00 cost to me. :( Windows 7 does not support Moneydance. Oh, it supported it for awhile till one of the updates happened and Windows 7 was not able to support it anymore. YOU GUYS SHOULD KNOW THIS. MONEYDANCE CAN NOT RUN ON 64 BIT - WINDOWS 7. Or least it won't run very long. I had to have him load moneydance onto my husbands laptop that runs on Windows xp. It runs great there, except for printing of checks. Its always something with moneydance. Having it on my husbands computer is VERY inconvient. Needless to say I will be changing back at the end of the year to quicken.

To add some perspective on this thread, I've been running MD on my Win 7 64bit machine for many months updating as needed with zero issues or problems. To make a blanket statement that MD does not run on this configuration is incorrect.

Moneydance definitely runs on Windows 7 64bit. You will have to install 64bit java if you want to run it natively as a 64bit program. By default if you download the Windows version of Moneydance with java it comes with 32bit java. This is fine as Windows 7 will run 32bit java in Windows XP compatibility mode. The computer expert you hired is incorrect.
If you would still like assistance with you windows 7 Moneydance problem let me know and I will assist you.
Sincerely

After all of our correspondence you should have figured this out. Once again, to someone that is not a computer expert, it is very hard to understand everything you want done. It would have been much easier to do this over the phone. And then maybe you would have been able to figure out why I couldn't run your program anymore.

Hi Janet
The last time I wrote to you on August 27th I asked you to reinstall the program and you did not respond to me until today. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version of Moneydance on your windows 7 machine?
I am afraid it would not be possible for us to provide technical telephone support without drastically increasing the price of the software.
I am happy to continue assisting vie this forum and if you would prefer not to use the software I will issue a refund.
Sincerely
Ben Spencer
