Syncing

When I initially set up my iPhone/iPad apps, they synced fine.
Now, it appears they are no longer syncing. My iPad shows the last sync as 7/12/10 at 10:24am.
The iPhone shows the last sync as 7/9/10 at 4:36 pm.
I've tried quitting the program/apps and restarting. That doesn't seem to help.

Thanks.

The first thing I recommend you do is re-download aad re-install the latest version of the desktop program from the website using the following link.

    http://moneydance.com/other

Even if you already have updated to this build I recommend using this download as the previous version of the same build was being blocked by the desktop fire wall on some machines.

If that does not help please try completely turning of the firewall on your desktop.

    Sincerely
    Ben Spencer

I downloaded the iPad app and it did not sync.
I followed the suggestion on this thread and re-downloaded the app.
It synced once, then stopped working.
I re-downloaded the desktop app as suggested. Still doesn't work.
I tried turning off the firewall. Nothing.
    Any ideas?

Is anyone else having syncing problems?
I bought the program because of it's purported ability to sync with iPad/iPhone.
If I can't make it work, it's of no use to me.
I hope someone from the support staff will respond with a solution.
    Thanks.

Can you tell me if you redownloaded and reinstalled the desktop app as I described in the above response.

    Yes, I downloaded it.
Moneydance says I am currently running version 2010r3 (751).
It appears that both the iPhone and iPad are now syncing.
However, the iPad won't sink unless I turn off my iPhone!
    Is that normal?

    Thanks.

I've been having the same problem (iPad syncs, initially but, not thereafter) so, I downloaded the above referenced build but, it didn't help, although the "Last Sync indicator" indicated it had just synced. I waited for the data to update but, it didn't.
Then I turned off iPad Moneydance and the iPad, for a minute, and back on. At that point, the data appeared, correctly updated, on the iPad.
Seems to be a refresh, problem, in my case.

    Hi all,

I think they syncing should be on track now. It is especially important to wait for the desktop Moneydance app start before before opening the Moneydance iPod/iPad app.

If you are still having syncing issues booting in this manner please do let me know. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance,

Apparently I'm having this problem too! I just noticed that Moneydance on my iPod Touch running iOS 4 last synced on August 5.

I re-downloaded and installed the latest desktop version from http://moneydance.com/other
I made sure I am running the latest version of the iPod app
I waited until the desktop app was running before opening the iPod app. Nothing.
I went into Extensions->Configure Network Syncing and told it to Forget the device.
Then, I tried to Add it. The desktop can see the device just fine, and asks me for the access key, but the device acts like it cannot see the desktop and never gives me an access key to enter on the desktop!

I deleted the app off my iPod, and then reinstalled it via iTunes.
That finally got it to work, at least for now, although I lost all of my unsync'ed transactions from the iPod.

Sure would be nice to be able to force a sync on the iPod, to help in testing this stuff.

We are currently investigating using an entirely new method of syncing using an encrypted internet cloud service. Syncing locally over the lan introduces so many variables (desktop firewall, router, correct subnet...) that diagnosing the reasons for failure to sync is becoming impractical. I am sorry that this is causing you so much trouble. The developers are working hard on a system that will be much more bullet proof.

Encrypted internet cloud service - I like that idea. I agree that it avoids the hassles trying to resolve the innumerable ways that networks are set up and is in line with where the world is going anyway. Any idea when this new approach will be rolled out?

We are still in the experimental stages with a 3rd party api at the moment. It looks promising and I am afraid that I couldn't offer even a reasonable guess as to when we will get this up and running.

    Hello,

In trying to battle this persistent problem with syncing Moneydance between my Mac and iPad, I thought I'd try deleting the iPad from Moneydance and adding it again. That appears to be something that hasn't been programmed for as the iPad verision doesn't seem to have the ability to re-generate access keys.

What can I do now? Can I restore some file from Time Machine?

    Barry,

Boy, do I ever have a beautiful solution for you (soon to be an FAQ on the forums).

The access key is shown only the first time the app opens, and you need to reinstall the app to see the key again. However, the key is stored in your Moneydance data file, and we now have a clean way for you to retrieve it.

    1) Install the "Python Interface" extension through Extensions->Add->From the Internet
    2) Download the "Print Iphone Access Keys" file which is attached
    3) Run the Python extension by going to Extensions->Python Interface
    4) Select the Read from File option
    5) A window (should) appear which will contain your access key and look like the attached screenshot (with your key in place of the black box)
    6) Restart Moneydance (just to be on the safe side)
    7) Enter the access key to re-enable the connection with your device

Let me know how it goes, you're the first customer I've given the python script to, although I've used it myself. I hope it works out for you, and we are looking into adding the ability to re-generate the access key in future versions of the app so our users don't have to go through this somewhat unwieldy process.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance,

I too continue to fail to get my iPad to sync, unless I delete the App, re-install, re-enter code etc. As far as I can tell the Python process, which I installed just makes it easier to reenter key once I delete the App and re-install.
Please, please fix the syncing. If only as a fix, why not through iTunes like Goodreader etc?

Also the "Investment" section does not show up in iPad (just shows Bank AC, Credit Cards, Assets, Liabilities)

    Hi

    Please try the following:

Turn off the firewall on your desktop. (just to check and make sure this is not the issue.)

    Open the desktop app first.

    Then select Help->Console Window.

    Wait for 30 seconds.

Then turn on the mobile device and let it join the wifi network. Make sure both your desktop/laptop are connected to the same local network as the iPhone.

Then start MD on the iPhone.

If that doesn't cause a sync to occur please paste the console window output to a forum discussion.

I followed these instructions with my iPad. No luck.
I SOMETIMES can get it to synch by clicking on "add device" in the Configure Network Synching
extension, but usually, as now, it says "No devices running Moneydance were found".
Yes, I am on the same network and both devices are otherwise functioning correctly.

    Console window:

    Starting Moneydance 2010r3 (751)
    Settings Folder: /Users/xxxxxxx/.moneydance
    OS: Mac OS X 10.6.4 i386

There are some wifi routers out there that do not correctly forward and broadcast the bonjour discovery message. This is the message that Moneydance sends out to announce its presence on the network. Given that you have gone through check list in the FAQ It sounds like you may have such a wifi router. If you are technically inclined I encourage you to log into the web interface on your wifi router and see if there are any settings relating to bonjour (aka zeroconf). Failing that there is not much we can do at the moment. We are working on a new version of the iPhone app and extension that does not use the bonjour protocol.

I too have run into this iphone sync'ing issue today. I enabled the MD console and then started the iphone app. I think I see what the problem is but don't know how to fix it.

In the console window I can see that it tries to make a connection to my iphone using the URL http://192.168.16.1:6636 and that gets a java error. This is because that is the wrong IP address for my iphone. In fact that is a completely wrong subnet for my home network. I should be on the 192.168.1.x subnet.

I have verified that the laptop where MD is installed and the iphone are both in the 192.168.1.x subnet so I am not sure where this odd subnet is coming from in the MD console.

How does MD determine what URL to connect to? Is that stored somewhere?

The full stack I see from the java console is:

    svc resolved: iPhone; type:mdncsync.tcp.local.
attempting to sync with iPhone URL http://192.168.19.1:6366
    java.net.connectexceptions: connection timed out: connect

The network 192.168.19.1 is not my subnet yet I am connected to my local wifi network. Where does it get that IP from?

It might be that your iPhone is inadvertently connecting to neighbours wifi connection.

Can you please confirm the Ipaddress of you iPhone. To do this run the settings app and select on the "WiFi" option. Then press the blue arrow (>) on the wifi network you are connected to.

Could you also please confirm the ipaddress of your PCs network interface. On windows open a command prompt by typing CMD in the Run dialog box on the start menu. Once you have a command prompt enter the command:

    ipconfig

    to see you ipaddress.

    Ben,

    Thanks for the response.

I know for certain that the laptop and iphone are both on my network but
I just double checked now. The IP's are as follows:

    iphone = SSID=MCAMPBELL, IP=192.168.1.118
    laptop = SSID=MCAMPBELL, IP=192.168.1.104

I have now tried to delete/reinstall the iphone app and now when the app
is started it shows the key to enter and on the laptop I see the dialog
box to enter the key. However, even after entering the correct key into
the dialog box the console window still shows it tries to connect to
    http://192.168.19.1:6366

There are no hard coded ipaddress in the iphone app or netsync extension so this unrecognised address must be coming from your network. can you try pinging 192.168.19.1 from your laptop. Open a terminal and enter the command.

    ping 192.168.19.1

No, I cannot ping 192.168.19.1 from my laptop or any machine on my
network. However, oddly enough when I tried to setup sync today it
works. The console log now shows it connecting to the correct URL of
http://192.168.1.118:6366 and I am able to sync properly.

    Very odd

That is extremely odd. Do you have any NAT (network address translation) going on between your laptop and iPhone on your router?

    Ben

  25. 26 Posted by Mike Campbell on 27 Oct, 2010 08:23 PM

    Mike Campbell's Avatar

Nope, no NAT for the local lan side of things. Obviously NAT is setup
between the internal network of 192.168.1.x and the internet but not for
    connections between local computers.

I am fairly confident that this is not related to the Moneydance app or extension and has something to do with the configuration of your network. However I cannot be certain. If the problem happens again let me know and I will investigate further.

iPad sync is erratic. Re-downloaded and installed MD as Ben suggested at the top. Both laptop (Mac OS X) and iPad are on same (wifi) subnet.

    Console window reads:
    Starting Moneydance 2010r3 (751)
    Settings Folder: /Users/tom/.moneydance
OS: Mac OS X 10.5.8 ppc
    Java: 1.5.0_26 (Apple Inc.)
    setStatus(Saving file, 0.0010)
    setStatus(Save completed successfully, 0.0)
    svc added: iPad type:mdncsync.tcp.local.
    requested service info

If I turn the iPad's wifi connection off, then turn it back on, then relaunch MD on the iPad, it will usually then sync (and did so just now).

This worked great. I thank you for your help.

I was also wondering, can I sync the Ipad to two different computers, running the same MD file? Ie: my pc at home and my pc at our vacation home. Or is it best to use drop box for this?
