I just upgraded to Ubuntu ver. 10.04 and MD will not open.......it just stands mute. I have seen discussions elsewhere that there is a
problem re: Java file relocation with the new Ubuntu but have not seen any solutions. Anyone have any info???

Isn't that nice? I just got that myself. Upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04 (or other flavors, like Xubuntu) actually removes Sun Java from your system, if you installed it from their repository originally. (I guess the Ubuntu folks are saying: you didn't need that.)

You have 2 choices. Ubuntu release notes say you should use openjdk instead of sun-java. No thanks, not until the Moneydance staff tests and qualifies it. (Not holding my breath for that to happen).

Choice 2 is to install (re-install) Sun's Java. You can do that through the Ubuntu installer (synaptic) but you have to add a repository first. There is a command-line step in the release notes linked above, and you can also do it through synaptic. Then you install 3 packages: sun-java6-jre (which brings in sun-java6-bin), and sun-java6-fonts. If you would like more detailed instructions I can post them here.

You can probably also do this using the download right from Sun, or even the Moneydance installer that includes Java. But I used the above 'choice 2' and it worked without problems.

UPDATE re: MD failure to launch......I staggered around for some time with Java
without any tangible results. I finally deleted the entire MD folder and reinstalled
Moneydance in a new folder in the same location using the x86wj.tar.gz version. This
worked OK without any additional issues. I didn't lose any data since all MD
data was stored on an external USB drive.

Thanks for the information. I haven't got around to updating ubuntu on my work machine yet and so havent tested Moneydance on 10.04. OpenJDK should just be the GPL stuff from the sunJDK. I'm installing a new test machine with 10.04 as I write this and will thoroughly test out the OpenJDK with Moneydance on that machine and report back.

My mistake. I thought OpenJDK was a 'clone' product; I didn't realize it was Sun's relicensed parts of Java.

So I switched my Xubuntu from sun-java6 to openjdk-6-jre (no risk, as I don't use Xubuntu for my real stuff.) At first glance, it seems OK with Moneydance. I did notice that you cannot tell from Help > About that you are using OpenJDK. It just says "Java version: 1.6.0_18, Vendor: Sun".

Then I tried to print. No good - lines are all squished together. It is possible I just have some setting different - I'll try the font preferences again, and see how it works with sun-java6 - but for now it doesn't look good.

Follow-up: Landscape page orientation report printing seems to be broken with OpenJDK. Portrait page is OK.

I'm not sure where you will go with this. OpenJDK is probably the future for Java end users, so I don't think it can be ignored. Want me to open a Trac report? I can include a picture of the deformed report.

    Hi lbj,

I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 a few days after it came out and didn't even realize they'd gotten rid of Sun Java until Ben mentioned it to me today! I haven't noticed any difference in how Moneydance runs since the change.

Which report are you trying to print? I printed the transactions list and the Income and Expenses report in landscape with no problems. It could be that there are problems with specific reports though, so if you let me know which one(s) you are trying to use, I can test them on my machine as well.

If you installed MD using a package which includes Java ("Linux, includes Java"), then the Ubuntu upgrade won't affect you because your MD has its own JRE.

But if you installed MD using a package without Java ("Linux, does not include Java", or my favorite, "Generic Unix"), and relied on Java from the Ubuntu repository, then the upgrade will break MD when it removes Java. One might do this because one needs Java for other things such as OpenOffice.org or a web browser, also because it is easier to upgrade Java that way for things like security updates.

If you then follow the Ubuntu folk's advice and install OpenJDK instead of Sun-java6, you then have MD + OpenJDK. That's where landscape mode printing breaks. I didn't try every report, but every report I tried broke this way.

You can tell which flavor of Java you have from the command line "java -version" (OpenJDK vs Java(TM) SE), but that doesn't necessarily show you what Moneydance is using. Help>About doesn't help because OpenJDK also identifies itself as being from Sun. For me, MD reports OpenJDK as Java 1.6.0_18 and Sun-6-java as 1.6.0_20 but that isn't generally helpful.

(Follow-ups should probably go to a new thread, as I see the original thread starter has tried to unsubscribe twice now.)
