Add Extension "from File" throws Java error
I get this error if I try to use Add Extension and choose from File in the Wizard radio button and hit Next.
Java.lang.IllegalArguement Exception: null
I can't get to the point where I should choose the .mxt file.
Really need to get forecaster installed if anyone knows why this choice doesn't work.

I meant to post this under "Problems" maybe someone could move it there?

Pete,
Would you please let me know your OS, the version and build of Moneydance you are using, and the version of Java you are running? This will assist us with hunting down the problem.
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance,

Angie, is there anything else I can try here?

Can you tell me which build of Moneydance you are running. If you are not running build 748 please download it from the link below and let me knwo that resolves the problem.

I had 2010 version 735. I'll try this other version. Hopefully it can import my data from this other one?
Support Staff 8 Posted by Ben Spencer on 25 Apr, 2010 06:28 PM
Yes, 748 uses exactly the same file format as 735.

In case the latest MD build does not solve the problem, try updating your Java Environment to SUN JRE 1.6 (6.0)
Also, could you tell us please which specific forecaster extension you are about to install?

I am having this same problem, but I'm on Mac OS 10.5.8. Build 751.
I have a completely different system, but it's the same problem: I can't even get to the screen where I can choose an extension from the file system. On the first screen that pops up, if I choose "from file," and click "next," I get the error message.
Raimund: the extension doesn't matter, because we can't even get to the extension loading screen. This behavior has nothing to do with any specific extension.

JWC,
This issue is usually caused by a Java version issue. Could you please let me know what version of Java you are running? If you are not running Java 6, that is likely the source of the issue. There is a good example of this issue and it's resolution available here.
Good luck, and do let me know how it goes.

Angie,
I'm glad to know there's a fix but unfortunately I don't think I can get it. I'm on a PPC Mac, and Java 6 seems to be only available for 64-bit Intel Macs.
Out of luck I guess?
Support Staff 13 Posted by Tom Freeman on 19 Oct, 2010 08:53 PM
JWC,
Try uninstalling your version of Moneydance and doing a complete new install from here :http://moneydance.com/other.
The developers did a bug fix that doesn't come across the updater. I've been told that this solves the problem Mac Users may face.
If it doesn't work come back and we'll move forward from there.

Hello,
I'm having the same problem. As suggested above, I deleted the old MD application file, downloaded the latest version, and reinstalled. The error still exists.
I am running Moneydance 2010r3 (751) , Java Version: 1.5.0_19, Mac OS X 10.4.11. I think this is the latest version of Java that runs on 10.4.
Can you look into this further?

Please tell me what extension you are trying to install?
Also can you select Help->Console Window and then try to add the extension. Then copy and paste the console output to this discussion.
Sincerely

It doesn't let me get to the point of selecting the extension. When I click
the radio button for "from file" and then click next, it immediately throws
the error. If I select "from internet" and click next, it works fine.
Sorry, I'm not near the computer with Moneydance on it, so I might have some
of the labels above incorrect.
Thanks!!

When you get back to your computer can you show me the console output.

There was no output to the console window other than the software
version information:
Starting Moneydance 2010r3 (751)
Settings Folder: /Users/ebrown/.moneydance
OS: Mac OS X 10.4.11 ppc
Java: 1.5.0_19 (Apple Computer, Inc.)
The exact popup error I receive is
Error:
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: null owner window

I receive the same java error when I try to add an extension from file.
The extension in am currently trying to install is the forecaster.
No output in the console window.
Starting Moneydance 2010r3 (751)
Settings Folder: /Users/dschultz/.moneydance
OS: Mac OS X 10.5.8 x86_64
Java: 1.6.0_22 (Apple Inc.)

Hi David,
In order to capture console output, the console window needs to be open while you attempt to install the extension. So, you would need to open the error console first and then try to install the extension. Could you please try this and copy any output here?

I tried again and opened the console first. I think I did this before as well.
No messages appeared.
Thanks for the quick response!

Same here -- no message, even when opening the console. For me, this
error occurs as soon as I click "Next" after selecting "From File." I
don't have a chance to select a file, though.

Using Windows 7:
Now I am a newbie considering Moneydance as MS Money now has whipped out its online facilities using a trail package, so there may be user error here:
I am trying to install the new forecaster-14.mxt that I have just downloaded from one of the links on your forum.
I get the same result whether using the console or the menus, I select the extension file - click open and get "Error: java.lang.NullPointerException" . It then throws me back to the radio butttons for chosing From the Internet or From File.
All help appreciated. Thank you

I am able to select a file there error is thrown after the file open.

Hi Andrew, David,
Try renaming forecaster-14.mxt to just forecaster.mxt.

Wow, That worked for me.
I don't want to know why :-)
27 Posted by -Kevin N. on 01 Mar, 2011 01:13 AM
Hi David,
Glad to hear it worked.
Just FYI, the developer released a newer version 15 of the forecaster with a running balance in the table view.
Look to post # 20 of the following thread:
http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/switching-to-moneydance-fr...
Remember to rename the file forecaster.mxt

Got V15 and it worked like a dream. Now the only thing left for MD to fix to get convertees from MS Money is the UK Mutual / Unit trust fund price updates and then I will have a package I can pay for and use for a long time in the future. :)
One other comment - Please update the online guide - 1st thing I've tried and found to be out of date was the section on how to update stock & share prices!!

Hi Andrew,
Glad to here you got it working. Also, we're just about to release an update to our online documentation, to go with the release of MD 2011. Look for changes in the near future!
