Hi,

I'm starting to have a problem with my Capital One Banking account not working. The error message is

A communication or parsing error occurred. This could be the result of a network problem, a proxy error, or misconfigured server. Error Description: java.net.UnknownHostException: ofx.capitalone.com

Capital One says there's system is working.

This is for a Capital One bank account, not a Capital One 360 or Credit Card account.

Thank you,
Chris

If you are getting a crash when trying to import a file, it suggest you may be using a mac running the High Sierra OS.

If you are, you need Moneydance 2017.6 to work around the crash issue introduced in High Sierra

After I click "Download Transactions", from Account Services and Settings (after doing View Account), I get a popup box with a Select File Type drop-down (see first attachment). When I click the drop-down arrow, I have the three options (see second attachment). I'm using Chrome on a Windows desktop.

    Hi:

I have used Safari and Chrome on a Mac, and I do not get those options with either. Capital One only gives me the option to download a csv.

You are logging into Capital One, right. Not Capital One 360.

You now access Capital One Bank and Capital One 360 accounts from the same login session, but yes, it was a Capital One Bank account download session I took the screenshots from. Capital One 360 accounts still supports the direct connect so no need to manually download transactions (yet). Interestingly though, their manual Download Transactions option let's you select the date range of transactions to download. For your issue, it would be interesting to see if you have a Windows computer available to you to try it to see if the issue is with the platform or your account. For your issue, Capital One's Chat or Phone tech support should be able to help you.

    Hi:

Well, I am only able to do Capital One and 360 in separate sessions. If I log into Capital One 360, I can see the Capital One account. But if I try to access it, the page makes me log into Capital One.

Not sure how you are doing that since they've combined them. Maybe you are using really old urls. See below link for a demo of their latest site, they sent that url to me in an email on 12/7 with Subject of "Coming soon -- a fresh new online banking experience". Click on Take A Look to see how it should look. And there's a Sign In option in the top right hand corner for you to log into their latest site.

    Hi ppinocci

I went to the URL you sent, and it allows me to login. And, as you say, it has a selection for Quicken and Money QFX files.

But the only account that downloads is my Capital One 360 account. My regular Capital One account will not download.

So, have you actually downloaded a QFX file from a Capital One account (not Capital One 360). I have found nothing. I’ll try to call Capital One on Monday when the online banking folks are in the office. (If you call after non-working hours, you get a person, but they are only phone-answerers. They don’t really know the innards.)

Appreciate your assistance. If you can see where I am missing something, please let me know.

Thank you very much. Yes. I am running High Sierra. I have 2017.2 for Moneydance.

Do I need to pay to upgrade to 2017.6? I am a bit reluctant to invest $49.99 in a new version of Moneydance until this Capital One problem gets resolved.

I was able download transaction from Capital One Bank, but I’m on Windows 10 Chrome. From https://myaccounts.capitalone.com/accountSummary page click on Account->Account Services and Setting->Download Transaction.

At this point it asks for File Type, options are CSV, OFX, and OSO, once file type is select button changes to Begin Export. It downloads the last 100 transactions.

    Hi dwg:

OK. I downloaded 2017.6 and entered https://www.capitalone.com in the account web address. This takes me to the same website with only CSV downloads.

I downloaded and imported a csv file. About half of the entries imported correctly, including showing a merge with an existing entry. Three came in with incorrect nonzero values, and the rest came in with zero values.

The csv file appears to be correct, and I don’t see any stray commas. Any ideas for the incorrect and the zero transactions?

It seems that some folks are able to download QFX files from Capital One, but I cannot. I’ll call the bank Monday.

Vince, What exactly do you mean when you say you can't download QFX for Capital One Bank? Do you get an error? Is QFX not listed in the Select File Type drop-down? Do you not even have a Select File Type drop-down? Does it look totally different than the Download Transactions pop-up in my screenshots? Can you provide screenshots? Are there any other Mac people out there who can chime in that they are either having or not having the same problem downloading QFX from Capital One Bank, just to see if it is a Mac thing?

    Hi ppinocci

For Capital One, I get a drop down for downloads, but it is only for csv. If I login to Capital One 360, I get the drop down that allows QFX for Quicken and Money, plus csv. This is the same whether I use my Mac or the Windows VM machine.

So, I am not sure what is up. I will call Capital One online tomorrow to try to see. (I can call today and get a human, but it is just a first level person. Need to wait for business hours to get someone in the know.)

    Thanks for the note.

I neglected to mention, that when trying to setup a direct connection with Capital one (not credit cards) I get the same error:

I called the bank and they said it was an issue with Moneydance

    Folks:

Well, I spent some time on the phone with Capital One. It was not very satisfying. Basically, unless Moneydance “dances” with the new exchange protocol, there will be no sharing or uploading of data with Capital One. In fact, I can’t even log into my Capital One accounts with Moneydance.

Also, Capital One simply will not allow downloads of QFX files. No option. I know some folks say they can, but I cannot and the bank confirmed it. My only option is to download csv files. The transactions download to csv just fine. Gives day, payee, and amount. However, when you import the csv to Moneydance, about 1/3 of the transactions come up with a zero value or with a value less than a dollar. Incorrect. I have tried this numerous time with the same result—a correct csv file but incorrect import. Frankly, the csv import is trash in Moneydance.

The only “less bad” news is that Capital One 360 will still allows Moneydance to connect. You have to go onto the 360 site and make up a new password. So Moneydance has its password, and it is different from your normal web login password.

Also, Capital One 360 will allow a QFX download.

I am totally pissed at Capital One—they knew users are doing online banking, but there was no effort to let us know about changes. However, all I can do is bitch or change banks. I am just bitching now.

So, it appears that there are only three choices:

    1. Move your account payment process to Capital One 360 (this is what I am doing for now).
    2. Move your bank to one that is supported by Moneydance.
    3. Change to Quicken, which is supported by Capital One.

I hope that Moneydance can accommodate Capital One in the future—the near future.

Sorry to tell you this... but years ago I had Quicken for Hibernia ( now Capital One) after 10!years with Quicken they did the same thing... and said, “sorry, we no longer support Quicken”. Then I had to manually input almost an entire year of transactions. I switched to Moneydance and now the same. It makes me wonder if there is a payoff for these companies to be associated with a certain program. Beyond exceptable....frustrating, and ridiculous!!!

I am able to download a QFX file from Capital One Banking for my standard checking account. (I'm using Firefox Quantum 57.0.4 on MacOSX High Sierra). This file imported correctly into Moneydance (2017.5). The default 100 transactions (and now real ability to filter that) is annoying. I will miss being able to do Direct Connect, it was very convenient to pay bills directly out of MD.

I did notice on the Quicken support page for the Capital One Direct Connect transition (link below) that Intuit mentions they are working with Capital One to port to a new API-based access in 2018. To Ian or the other MD support folks, is there a new financial standard API coming down the pike or are banks moving to custom API's? Is this something MD would potentially support?

Thanks. I am on High Sierra and have tried Safari and Chrome. I can only download csv files from Capital One on either browser. I can do QFX from Capital One 360. I cannot upload transactions on either site.

So I don’t know why you can do it and I cannot.

I would be ok with downloading csv files, but one-third or more of the transactions are imported incorrectly into MoneyDance. The csv file is correct, but MD imports the balance incorrectly.

I also hope that MD can get this squared away.

Hope you don't mind but just for giggles, I chatted with Capital One support (Curtis this time) and flat-out asked him what file formats are supported with Download Transactions, without telling him the ones I see. See helpful part of chat session below (full chat session attached). So I would work with Capital One to make sure you are on the latest platform and get your accounts consolidated. And remember, they have branches still and the people at the desks are very helpful, so it might be a better experience going to a branch, although maybe not as convenient. Sometimes they have coffee and snacks. Good luck.
    -------------
Curtis: It should bring down a dropdown menu where you can select to download transactions as CSV, QFX or QBO (the last two are more Quicken/Quickbooks specific).

Me: Yes, that is what I see, I just wanted to hear it from you. I know of Capital One Bank users who say they can only download CSV for some reason. One of them called Capital One support and was told Capital One Bank only supports CSV for downloads.

Curtis: It's a little tricky right now because we're in the middle of migrating our customers to the new site platform. Therefore, different people, depending on what platform they're on may have different options for now. Also, whether it's 360 accounts or regular Capital One accounts also comes into play with this. CSV does indeed seem to be the most consistent at this point though.

Me: Funny you should mention that. He insists he has to login to separate accounts to access his Capital One Bank and Capital One 360 accounts. And when he logs into his Capital One 360 account, he can export QFX. So I was thinking the same thing, he hasn't gotten his accounts consolidated yet. Do you think that would do it?

Curtis: Yes! For sure. Once he's migrated over and we get all the kinks worked out (it's still not perfected) that should help a lot. If he's still on the separate platforms now though, then yes, it's very possible he'd see different options within the different portals.

I just spent over 2 hours with Capital One. They don't have a clue and there is NO tech support you can talk with. The Capital One 360 is still listed on the accounts page when you go to set up a new account. This is so very frustrating!

I won't do work-arounds with a bank. Either they support it or they don't. I will be closing my Money Market with them and my credit card.

FWIW, Capital One 360 still has OFX/direct access for transaction download. However, they dropped OFX bill pay a few years ago - around 2013 if I remember right.

BTW, I noticed these posts while looking for Capital One Investing problems as my accounts there have stopped direct connecting as of last Sat. Cap1 Investing has had a couple of outages in the recent past so I wonder if they may be dropping OFX.

    Update: Cap1 Investing OFX back on-line 3/6/18.
