Incorrect investment performance calculations
I am happy to see the addition of the "All %" column in the Portfolio report in 2011. Unfortunately I am noticing discrepancies in the calculated ROI in both the 2011 bld 778 Portfolio and Investment Performance reports compared to the 2010 bld 757 Investment Performance report. I'm also seeing small discrepancies in the 2010 bld 757 results. The results below are for a randomly selected mutual fund in my file:
2010 bld 757 Investment Performance:
All dates option: 9.89%
custom date w/ today's date: 9.90%
2011 bld 778 Investment Performance:
All dates option: 9.07%
custom date w/ today's date: 9.90%
2011 bld 778 Portfolio:
ALL % column: 7.14%
Unless I'm misunderstanding something all of these numbers should be the same. I believe the 2010 bld 757 numbers are an improvement over the earlier builds I've used up to recently. The 2011 bld 778 Investment Performance numbers look similar to the older 2010 builds, but I couldn't say they're identical.

I agree some numbers look a little odd. I'm trying out the Portfolio report. What is the definition and calculation of "All"? That is where the numbers seem to be most unusual.

I'm assuming that "All" means all dates, i.e. the entire time that you've held a security.

Then should it match the "% Change" figure for the security located under the Securities Detail tab? If so, then the All column is way off.

I believe the Securities Detail tab only deals w/ cost basis vs. current share value. If you have a mutual fund for example, the ROI takes into account things like dividend, interest, and capital gains distributions. For example I have a bond mutual fund w/ only about 4% change in share price as shown in the securities detail display, but 53% total ROI (about 7% average annual ROI). If I'm not mistaken the All % column in the Portfolio report should match the Annual % (ROI) column in the Investment Performance report if you include the entire time period you've owned the security. As the numbers above show, it does not.

Zeke,
Can you provide us with a md data file that demonstrates an example of what you're seeing that is incorrect? Ideally the file should only contain the example of the problem. IF it contains info that you wish to keep private (apart from us) you can begin a new conversation thread that is private. If the file contains nothing that must remain private, then you can attach it to this conversation.
Once we have a file demonstrating the problem, we can figure out the cause and fix it.
Thanks,
Brian Adler

This actually is very similar to an issue I noticed in MD 2010. See http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/problems/1454-problem-w-in...
Can you use the file I uploaded then?

Zeke,
I apologize for the long absence, we're deep into the Moneydance 2011 release. Have you noticed any improvement with the release of Moneydance 2011 and these calculations, or are you experiencing the same issues? If let me know and I'll get together with our developer and the sample data file you linked to and look further into the discrepancies.

Zeke,
There is a bug. I found it while running a test file for another thread. I've attached a ticket to the developers with this post.
