Is there a way to track investment account balances by manually adjusting them periodically, based on financial statements? In other words, not downloading or entering the ups and downs, but simply using it track the total balance that I adjust periodically.

    just a user,

sure, I used to do that to keep up with some old securities.

I found the easiest way was to create a dummy category to allow me to use "Buy/Xfr" and "Sell/Xfr" to use as the "Transfer" account so I'm not affecting the investment account register or any other banking register as I adjust the share counts.

Then you can look at your current portfolio security counts and values and the security counts using "Sell/Xfr", "Buy/Xfr", and the security value by updating the security current value and history. I recommend using the "Security Price Entry" extension to update the prices. A bit easier to update the prices at one place.
