I am trying to set up online banking with Chase and getting the following message, after going through the "Setup Online Banking" on Moneydance: "User not authorized to access the system with this application." I have called Chase and after 30 minutes on hold was told to contact Moneydance and that there is something that needs to be done with Moneydance. I've read the user notes, and doing exactly what it says. I am able to go online to my chase account--just can't get Chase and Moneydance together. Help

    Hi Bonnie,
Is the account in question a Chase Credit Card account or is it a Chase banking accout?

If it is a Chase Credit Card account, you must activate the account for use with Quicken, Quickbooks, etc.by going on to the Chase Credit Card website and clicking the link on the 'Customer Center' tab.

If it is a Chase Banking account, don't hold me to this, but I believe that Chase charges $9.95 a month for the privilege of accessing your data.through direct-connect.

Personally, if my bank did that, my money would be in a different bank.

    Hi Bonnie,
Here are the steps for enabling a connection, if you have already followed those steps let us know and we will try other things. It is important to note that Chase has usually not heard of Moneydance and it is just easier to ask them about enabling it for quicken.

    1) select the account in Moneydance
    2) click the Online->Setup Online Banking button/menu
    3) click the "New Connection" button and select your bank from the list of banks
    4) click the "Next" button to select the account in Moneydance that should be connected (from step #1)
    5) The next step depends on the configuration of your bank's service, but I believe you will be asked to enter your routing number and account number, which should have been provided to you by your bank.

Many financial institutions will require you to enable your accounts for application-based online banking. You can accomplish this by asking your bank to set up your account for direct connections from Quicken. Moneydance uses exactly the same OFX server connection protocol as Quicken but your bank representative may not know this and mistakenly believe that you can not connect in Moneydance. Calling up your bank and stating precisely the following should get you started. "Please enable direct connect on my account such that I can connect to your servers directly with Quicken. Also give me the login credentials I need to connect Quicken to this service."
Application-based online banking often requires a different login/PIN than the ones that are used for ATM or web-based banking. When you enable your account for access from Moneydance or Quicken, your financial institution should let you know what customer ID/login and PIN to use.
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance, and thanks for your interest in Moneydance!

    Thanks for the quick response.

To Kevin: this is a Chase checking account. I had used Quicken previously with no problem and it was free. (I'm switching to MD because I upgraded to Lion).

To Jon: I completed steps 1-4, when I get to step 5, it asks for my User ID and password. I am using the id and password that I use to get into my Chase account, (and that I used when working with Quicken) and that is when I get the message mentioned in my first post. I had previous talked to Chase and the person I spoke to said that they recognized Moneydance but that MD (not Chase) had to do "something", but she did not know what, so that I could utilize MD. I tried again, and in addition to the message, it was also stating an error code 2000.

    Bonnie,
That error code sometimes comes up when a bank updates their connection protocol to a new release. A number of banks have been doing so lately and that may be the cause.
    Please try the below.
Moneydance needs to update your connection information. To do so, you'll need to recreate your connection. Below are the steps:

    1) Select your bank account in Moneydance
    2) Select the Online->Setup Online Banking button/menu
    3) Click the Disable button. If you don't see a disable button, continue to step 5.
    4) Select the Online->Setup Online Banking button/menu (again)
    5) Click the New Connection button and select your bank from the list of available institutions that pops up. Hit OK
    6) Continue with the setup process, entering your username/password
    7) Repeat steps 1-6 for any additional accounts

Make sure you pick new connection, even though your bank is still one of the connection choices after you disable it. Choosing your bank from the list of available banks will force Moneydance to download the updated information, which should then allow you to connect.

Please let me know if you continue to have connection problems after recreating your connection and sorry for the inconvenience.

    Sincerely,

OK. I tried it again and got the same message. I've been fooling around with it in the meantime and realized that what I was doing before with Quicken was downloading the transactions and then importing them into Quicken. I would be happy to do the same with MD, and I clicked on the "download all transactions" button (the "download checking transactions" was grayed out") and I get a message at the bottom of the MD page that there is no account to be downloaded. I went to my downloads folder and saw the last Quicken download and when I went to open it, I told it to open in MD, but nothing happened. (I did not mention that I upgraded to Lion before making the switch to MD, so I have apparently lost all of my quicken data--so much for progress). As much as I hate to lose the data, right now I would just be happy getting MD to work with my bank.

    Hi Bonnie,
The 'Download All Transactions' menu item as well as the 'Download Checking' menu item pertain to downloading data from you banks direct connect OFX servers. Since you have been unable to establish this type of connection, they remain greyed out.

However, you should still be able to manually download your data from the Chase website by signing on and usng there web base interface for downloading data.
Moneydance can easilly import OFX, OFC, QFX and QIF file formats. These file formats are often referred to as MS Money and Quicken formats. Moneydance can also import the CSV file format but it is much more involved. Try to use one of the other formats.

Once you've manually downloaded your data in one of the above mentioned formats you should open Moneydance, then from the Menu bar click on File > Import... An explorer window will open allowing you to navigate to the newly downloaded file.

Thanks Kevin: Well I got the info to download and had to tweak the $ a little but I am now all reconciled. However, the whole download and confirming matching entries seems to be very cumbersome (more so than Quicken). Basically, I had to manually click on each entry and mark it cleared. I hope that is not what I have to do each time. When I would click on each entry, on the right hand side another window would open to either "confirm" or "merge" data. If I hit confirmed, nothing changed in the transaction window. I thought it would at least mark it as cleared. It did not, so I manually marked each one, one by one, as cleared by right clicking. Is that the correct procedure--I hope not. What is it that is being confirmed when you hit the confirm button? After I marked everything as cleared, I reconciled and that worked smoothly, but it seems to me that the act of clearing each entry should be simpler. Can you help with that?

    Thanks for you assistance.

    Hi Bonnie,

If I hit confirmed, nothing changed in the transaction window. I thought it would at least mark it as cleared.

Go to File > Preferences > Network tab. Put a checkmark next to 'Mark Transactions as Cleared when Confirmed'
If in the future you wish to mark multiple txns as 'Cleared', select one txn then hold down SHIFT then select the last txn, this process should highlight all contiguous txns, at that point, right click and mark as 'Cleared'.

What is it that is being confirmed when you hit the confirm button?

Essentially you are confirming that the transaction is correct and to your liking. This process also removes the 'blue dot' indicator for unconfirmed txns and changes it to an italicized ' i ' in the right-hand margin of the 'Description' field, to indicate that the txn was imported from your financial institution.

The Users Guide, although vastly improved from previous manifestations, is probably not as verbose as it could be.

You need to setup your check account at Chase for Direct Access before Moneydance can connect to it. There will be a Direct Access fee from Chase in the amount of $9.95 per month. The reason you weren't incurring the $9.95 per month fee while using Quicken, was because Quicken was accessing your account using what is called Web Connect.

    1. Login to your account at Chase.
    2. Go to Customer Center
    3. Click on Financial Management Software
    4. Under Select Download Method, there ought to be an option to activate Direct Access

Thanks for your concern Kevin! I just basically want to reconcile with my bank and my register. So I will not be paying $120 a year for that. I'm not in the market for a new bank any time soon--I just had to go through a lot of issues a few months ago from an identity theft problem. And the one thing I will not do is pay anything online through a financial management software program.

I already took some of Kevin's suggestions and will try a matching/reconcile in a few days when I have some more activity. Thanks for all of your help--I was so used to Quicken and its procedures and reports. I will probably be back here with more questions.

    Hi Bonnie,
As with any new software, there is a learnig curve. I was a 10 year veteran of MS Money when I came upon Moneydance. I've since discovered that in most respects, Moneydance performs as well, if not better than MS Money. The warm and fuzzies for MS Money are long gone.
I am 100% in your court as far as paying a financial institution upwards of $120 per year for access to your own data. I can also relate to the bother of changing banks.
I can't imagine the horror story of dealing with identity theft. I don't envy you that nightmare.
Anyway, good luck with the program. Post back if you have any more questions.

I just purchased this MD software today - so far so good.

However, I did run into the same issue with trying to download Chase data through the MD software. Didn't work. (Worked just fine with Fidelity and American Express).

So I called chase online banking - they told me they don't support MD - they only support direct download to MS Money and Quicken.

Unless there is a workaround for this, it looks like I'll have to go to the website and manually download transactions, and then import them into MD.

...and i just re-read the above... you have already addressed this. my fault.

i did ask them on the phone - to walk me through it as if i was calling about accessing through quicken. i wanted them to give me a pin or customer id for the software. they said Chase doesn't provide a pin or customer id to use PFM software.

that is correct. i called back a second time and never mentioned i was using a different PFM software then quicken. jpmchase offers 2 services.
    1) download transaction data (free).
    2) download transaction data with bill pay via the PFM software ($9.95/month)
i don't care about bill pay through the software... so i told them i just want to download transaction data via quicken and asked them if i need a separate pword/pin/etc to enable quicken to pull this data from their servers. they told me i don't need a separate login/pword credentials.... supposed to use the same ones that the user would use to login to account on chase.com

    Robert,
    I am a Chase customer.
You need to enable your account at Chase for Direct Connect. See my post 12 for visual instructions on how to setup your account for Direct Connect.

Chase's free download of transactions is called WebConnect. It is a Quicken only protocol.

Chase's Direct Connect, which is a universal protocol within the U.S., costs $9.95 per month regardless of whether you use bill pay or not.

  20. 21 Posted by christopher.oldham on 03 Feb, 2012 03:08 PM

    christopher.oldham's Avatar

Actually there is another wrinkle to this. I am a Chase Customer too.

If you are using Quicken Essentials, for example, as I was once, the protocol used is Quicken Connect/Express Web Connect. This is proprietary protocol where the log-in info is actually stored on Quicken's servers and the connection to Chase is negotiated from them. This is a free service for Chase Customers using this protocol.

If you use Direct Connect then Chase charges the aforementioned iniquitous fee. MD does not support Web Connect.

Therefore if you want MD to download Chase transactions in "one step", then you have to pay the Chase Fee, otherwise you will have to do it in two steps as a file download and then subsequent import into MD.

    Hope that helps!

I found a problem where after a change to my user name and password on my Chase web logon, I attempted to reset in MD and do set-up new connections, entering the new user name and password, YET STILL GETTING THE ERROR 2000.

I finally fixed the problem by clicking the FORGET ONLINE PASSWORDS and then doing an Download all accounts. Each account then prompted me for the user name and password. The CHase prompt still had my original user name (even though I had went into the Set-up Online Banking and used the Change... button to set up a new connect for that account) so when I entered the correct user name and password in this prompt I was again able to download transactions.

    Hi Raygo,

If you check on the Chase website, you should find out that you do indeed have direct connections activated. It may have happened through some other process, but they definitely require it to be activated before you can use direct connect. It may have been activated through some other service you use with them however. You would have to consult them for details.

I sent in a request to Chase (the "We're Listening" thing on their online account page) complaining of the $9.95/per month fee for downloading automatically.

They just answered and said the fee only applies to business accounts. Personal accounts are free!

So I just activated it and all my Chase accounts downloaded. Yay!!!!!!!

(I just had to clean up 90 days worth of repeats - bless the merge button!)

So - to reiterate: If you have a personal account at Chase, the automatic download is FREE (even though it appears to say it's $9.95/month) - you just need to activate it!

I have been a Chase Cutomer for the past 5 years.

Be forwarned, you will have a charge on your account with Chase for $9.95 at the next billing cycle. It is not a free service.

Who ever responded to your request is referring to Quicken's Web Connect / Express Web Connect capability. That is FREE. But Chase's OFX Direct Connect service is not free. Chase actually pays Intuit a technology fee in order to provide OFX Direct Connect and Chase passes that fee onto ALL of it's OFX Direct Connect users.

Thanks for the heads up james f. I too have been a Chase customer for quite a few years and had been downloading all my transactions by hand. I will look further into this but here's the meat of the response I got from Chase:

There is no fee for PFM for personal accounts. The fee
only applies to business accounts. You may Direct Connect
online from the Customer Center Tab. Click on the
    "Financial Management Software".

I don't know if they recently changed policy or what but that response says to me that it's free for personal accounts. I'll keep an eye out for a charge but my impression is that it is indeed free.
